Chapter 325
Kai
I stare at Lyra as she sleeps. I don’t know exactly how long I have been sitting in this exact spot, watching the slow rise and fall of her chest. Maybe hours. Probably almost a full day now.
The door of her hospital room has opened and closed constantly. Her friends, Amara and Isolde, have gone and come back twice, their eyes red from crying. Even Kara came to visit her, standing silently by the bedside before leaving me alone with my thoughts. But through all the noise, Lyra remains completely still, lost in a weird, deep sleep.
Roman is also awake and healing in the ward just down the hall. His Lycan blood is working fast, and he actually managed to drag his battered body into this room once to check on her. The moment he stepped near her bed, a violent fury took over me. I stood up and forced him straight back to his damn room and warned him to stop using this tragedy as an opportunity to see Lyra. Roman had looked like he wanted to fight me, but sensibly, he chose his battles wisely. He backed down, turned around, and went back to his room, and I
haven’t seen his face since.
I can’t even remember how long that was. Lyra is still not awake.
The academy’s doctor explained it to me hours ago. The force of her lost memories trying to violently break through the mental block in her mind is what caused her body to completely break down. Her human form alone simply cannot handle all that power. If she had Wyndra, her fox spirit would have strengthened her core and shielded her mind. But without her fox, she is entirely defenseless. So, she
remains completely unconscious.
I stare down at her face. My heart beats hard against my ribs, a heavy, painful rhythm born from pure helplessness. She looks so peaceful
right now. And so very innocent.
A sharp ache tightens my chest with a sudden, suffocating fear. I am so terrified for her because of how these flashes of memories are causing her so much physical pain. Seeing her suffer like this makes me feel so upset and hopeless. At this point, it would be much better if she just doesn’t remember me anymore. If forgetting me means she can live a peaceful, painless life, I would gladly let her walk away.

**Don’t you ever say that!”* Vlad suddenly growls inside my mind, his voice loud and furious as he surges to the surface. “She is our mate! She needs to remember us, and she needs to connect back with Wyndra, her fox! Do not give up on her!”
I close my eyes, leaning my head against my clenched fists. “I know you’re right, Vlad. I know we can’t survive without her. But look at her. I am still so damn worried about her.”
“We have to stay strong for her,” Vlad insists, though his beastly voice softens.
I let out a ragged breath, my thoughts spinning in the dark. “Ever since we entered her life, Vlad, it has been from one nightmare to the
other. Why did the moon goddess make us mates if she was just going to make us face so many problems and obstacles? Why does it have to be
this hard?”

A heavy sigh echoes from my beast. I feel Vlad’s deep sadness mirroring my own, a crushing weight that makes it hard to breathe. “I don’t know as well, Kai,” Vlad whispers, shifting restlessly inside me. “I do not know why the path is this hard. But I know that we cannot let her go. Letting her go would completely destroy both of us. We survive together, or we don’t survive at all.”
I nod slowly in the quiet room. I lean forward, bridging the small distance between us, and press a soft, lingering kiss onto Lyra’s
forehead.
The moment my lips touch her skin, a shock jounces through my spine. I recoil instantly, my eyes widening in absolute horror. Her skin is
completely freezing.
“What the fuck?”
I quickly reach out to touch her neck gently with my fingers, then her arms, and every other inch of exposed skin on her face. A cold shiver runs down my spine with fear.
