The Lycan Primee’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance)

Chapter 40

Lyra

I’m staring at Kai’s unmoving face, and the silence in the apartment is deafening. His head is heavy in my lap, his eyes closed, and his skin that is usually so

warm with radiating power is turning cold.

Kai?I whisper, my voice cracking. I shake his shoulders, but his body just stays still Kai, wake up! This isn’t funny anymore! Please open your eyes!

Panic grips my throat. I’m crying now, seeing myself being executed in my mind. The King probably won’t believe me. The academy definitely won’t. I’m the

wolfless thief who was caught standing over the Crown Prince’s dead body. I need to call for help. I have to get the authorities, even if it means my life is

over.

Stop, Lyra. Breathe.

Wyndra’s voice echoes in my head, sounding calm and confident.

He’s dead, Wyndra! His heart isn’t beating!I cry out in my mind, my hands trembling as I press them against his still chest.

He is not dead. He istrapped,Wyndra says firmly. His beast is in trouble and he needs help fast. If you call for the guards now, they will only blame you for the

situation he is in. But we can save himif you are brave enough to open your heart.

I’m confused, my tears blurring my vision. What do you mean? I’m wolfless! I don’t have any power, Wyndra. How can I save him?

You have more than you know. Place your hand over his heart. Don’t think about the slave or the Prince. Think about the life force. Focus deeply on it.

I hesitate for a second before pressing my palm flat against the center of Kai’s bare chest. I close my eyes tight, trying to find whatever it is Wyndra is talking about. At first, there’s nothing but coldness. But then, I feel a tiny spark deep inside my own chest, a feeling of something I don’t even understand.

Transfer the spark to him,Wyndra instructs,

I let go of every fear and push forward, forgetting every bit of anger I’ve held against him. I just focus on that spark. Suddenly, a powerful burst of heat

surges through my hand. It feels like a bolt of lightning is traveling through my veins, screaming to get out.

A blinding light flashes behind my eyes, and a wave of raw energy leaves my body in a violent surge. It’s so powerful that it knocks the breath, out of me. My

vision goes dark, my muscles turning to water, and I collapse forward, falling right on Kai’s chest as I feel myself slipping toward a blackout.

One second. Two seconds.

That’s when I hear a raw groan and a breathless gasp that breaks through the quiet room.

The chest beneath me rises sharply, and I feel a loud, pounding thump against my ear. Kai’s heart is beating again. Fast, uneven, and really strong. Oh goddess, I really saved him. He’s really alive. Butwhat did I do? What was that spark I felt?

I’m too weak to move, my chin rests on his shoulder as I struggle to keep my eyes open. I feel a warm hand move. It’s slow at first, but then it slides into my hair, gently pulling the messy white strands out of my face. Kai’s other hand wraps around my waist, holding me to him with a softness I’ve never felt before.

Lyra? His voice is a rough rasp, barely a whisper.

I pull back just enough to look at him, my face streaked with tears and my body shaking. Oh, thank Goddess! I was so scared,I sob. I thoughtI thought

you actually died. You weren’t breathing.

Kai doesn’t move. He just lies there in the kitchen floor, staring up at me with a soft, confused look in his eyes. The usual ice, the arrogance, the mask of

the cruel Prince, it’s momentarily gone. He looks at me like he’s seeing me for the first time, his dark green eyes tracking every movement of my face.

We stay like that for a long time, the only sound in the room is our heavy, desperate panting. He raises his hand, his thumb trembling slightly as he strokes

my cheek, cleaning a single tear from my face. His touch is so gentle that I almost want to cry again.
