Chapter 41

How?he asks, his voice regaining some of its strength. I was in the dark. I couldn’t find my way back. How did you bring me back, Lyra?

I open my mouth to answer, the words My ghost wolf helped mealready sitting on my tongue, but a sharp command echoes in my mind.

Don’t.Wyndra’s voice is firm, cutting through my thoughts. Do not tell him what we did. For your safety and his, no one can know the spark exists yet. Not

even him.

I swallow hard as the weight of the secret settles in my chest. I look back down at Kai, trying to make my face look as confused as possible.

II really don’t know what happened,I stammer in a shaky voice. One minute you were standing there talking to me, and the next, you just collapsed.

You weren’t breathing, Kai. I was terrified. I was just about to run for the guards and call for help, and thenyou just gasped and woke up.

Kai doesn’t move. He stays on the floor and just looks at me. His dark eyes narrowed at me as if he’s looking for a lie, searching my face for the power he

must have felt surging through him. It’s a suspicious look. The look of a man who knows he’s being lied to but can’t prove how.

Just like that? I justwoke up?

Yes,my heart races with the guilt of lying to him, but I have to go with Wyn’s instructions. He looks like he’s about to question me again, he opens his

mouth to ask something else, when a sharp, desperate knock on the front door of the apartment interrupts him.

Kai lets out a long sigh. The vulnerability from a moment ago vanishes, replaced by his usual guarded mask. He grunts as he pushes himself up, his muscles

rippling under his pale skin. He reaches down and grabs my hand, pulling me up with him. I’m so weak I nearly trip, but he catches my elbow to steady me.

Calm down,he mutters, noticing the way I’m staring at the door with wide, fearful eyes. It’s probably just my sister. She’s the only one with a family bond

strong enough to feel it whenever my heart stops.

My blood runs cold. Waitdoes this usually happen? My voice is a whisper Your heart juststops?

The silence that follows is my answer. Kai doesn’t look at me, he just stares at the door, his expression turning hard and unreadable. The fact that he isn’t

shocked by his own neardeath experience tells me everything. This is a recurring nightmare for him.

He walks to the door and pulls it open. Standing in the hallway is Kara. Her face is filled with worry, but she isn’t alone. Princess Rina is right behind her,

wearing a revealing nightwear and looking worried.

Oh, Kai!Rina cries, immediately jumping forward to wrap her arms around his neck. She leans in, trying to press her lips to his, but Kai slightly shifts his

head, letting her kiss his cheek instead.

Not now, Rina. I’m tired,he says in a flat voice as he gently unhooks her arms from him,

Kara pushes past Rina and pulls Kai into a tight, fierce hug. I felt your heart stop, brother, she whispers, her voice trembling. I was so worried your heart

had stopped for good this time. Are you okay?

I’m fine, Kara. It passed,Kai says, though his eyes flick back to me for a split second.

Rina, finally realizing she’s being ignored, pulls back and smooths her hair. Her eyes lands directly on me. I’m still standing by the kitchen counter, my

jacket rumpled and my face probably a mess from crying.

Her expression shifts from fake concern to pure venom in an instant. She glares at me, her lip curling in disgust.
