Chapter 42
Lyra
Kara steps forward and stands between me and Rina. Her expression is tight with frustration.
“Mind the way you talk to her, Rina.” Kara’s voice is sharp and leaves no room for argument. She turns her attention to Kai, her eyes searching his face for any lingering signs of the attack. “When I felt your heart stop, I assumed you were with Rina. I went to her quarters first, which is why she followed me here.”
I stay back by the kitchen counter, trying to make myself as small as possible. The way Rina glares at me makes my skin crawl. There is deep hatred in her eyes. I’m certain that if Kai wasn’t standing right here, she would murder me without a second thought and go back to sleep like nothing happened.
“Has it slipped your mind that she stays in my apartment now?” Kai asks in a dry, bored tone. He doesn’t look at Rina as he speaks. “She is my slave. It’s only logical for her to be where I can keep an eye on her.”
I bite my tongue so hard I taste blood. The term slave makes me want to punch him. A few minutes ago, I was crying over his body, desperate to bring him back to life. I poured every ounce of my energy into saving him, and now he’s back to treating me like a piece of furniture. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. I feel foolish for ever worrying about him in the first place.
Rina lets out a huff and eyes me condescendingly from head to toe. She looks at my messy hair and my oversized jacket with pure disgust.
“I just assumed you would give her one of the rooms in your basement, Kai.” Rina scoffs and walks further into the living area. “Something small and
shabby. that actually befits a girl of her status. Having her in the main suite is….”
Kara’s face turns red with anger. She opens her mouth to snap back at Rina, but I step forward and gently touch her arm.
“Don’t worry about it, Kara.” My voice is quiet but steady. I look away from Rina’s hateful face and focus on the floor. I don’t want any more drama tonight.
I’m exhausted, and my head is starting to ache.
“I’m going back to my room now. I need to get some sleep. My weekly assessment test is in the morning, and I can’t afford to be tired.”
Before I turn, my gaze lands on Kai’s. We stare at each other for a long, silent moment. The air between us is thick with things we can’t say in front of the
others. His eyes are filled with a thousand questions. I can see curiosity and something else, like he doesn’t want me to walk away just yet. He wants to
know what I did. He wants to know how I brought him back from the dark.
I break the stare first. I can’t deal with him right now. I turn away and hurry down the short hallway to my room.
The moment I step inside, I shut the door and lock it with a click. I lean my back against the wood and slide down until I’m sitting on the floor. I let out a
breath I feel like I’ve been holding for hours. My heart is still cacing.
I lift my hands and stare at them. They look like normal hands but what they did tonight… How is that even possible?
“How did I do that?” I whisper to the empty room.
I’m a wolfless Omega. I’m the lowest of the low. Everyone has told me my whole life that I have no power, no purpose, and no future. So how did a burst of
energy leave my body and restart a Lycan’s heart? What does an ability like that even mean?
I close my eyes and try to reach out to Wyndra. I need answers, and she’s the only one who knows the truth.
‘Wyndra? Are you there?‘ I call out in my mind.

Chapter 42–
There is no answer: I can feel a faint presence, but she has retreated deep into the shadows of my mind. She’s far away, likely exhausted from whatever we just did together. I’m on my own for now.
