The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 43

Chapter 43

I let out a long sigh and pull myself up from the floor, I crawl into bed, even though my mind is spinning.

Tomorrow is my first weekly assessment at Krypton Academy. I’ve heard the rumors about these tests. They aren’t just written exams, they are designed to

weed out the weak.

If I fail, the academy will put me on probation. If I stay on probation, I lose my place here. And if I lose my place here, I’m back to being a prisoner at

Valeria pack. Possibly worse.

I stare at the ceiling for a long time, wondering if the girl who saved a Prince tonight is strong enough to survive a school full of challenges tomorrow.

I can’t fail,I mutter to myself as I pull the covers up. I won’t fail.

The sound of my virtual assistant Parish jolts me awake.

Hello Lyra Diamond, it is 6:30 AM, time for you to get ready for your weekly assessment test.

My eyes snap open and I sit up instantly. I don’t have time to think about my worries or the way my body still feels drained from the night before.

It takes me less than ten minutes to get ready. I pull on a comfortable tshirt and a pair of dark jeans. I gather my long silver hair and tie it back into a high ponytail to keep it out of my face. I skip breakfast because my stomach is in too many knots to even think about food.

I slip out of the apartment quietly and make my way toward the Apex Proving Grounds. The location parish showed me.

The Proving Grounds is a huge, circular hall located on the edge of the campus. My heart beats against my ribs like a trapped bird as I join the other students heading toward the entrance. I keep my head down, trying to blend/into the crowd.

When I enter the hall, I’m relieved to see only levelone students. There are bewolves and shewolves everywhere, but no Lycans. I let out a breath I didn’t

know I was holding.

Thank the Goddess for that.

Dealing with the highertier predators on top of this test would have been too much.

Lyra!

I turn and see Erika waving at me. She rushes over and pulls me into a tight hug. I stiffen for a second, still unused to people being kind to me, but then I

relax and hug her back.

You made it,she says with a bright smile.

I made it,I repeat. I look past her and spot Amara and Isolde sitting on a nearby bench. They are sharing a bag of pink cotton candy, looking completely

relaxed for people about to be tested. They both wave at me and I offer a small wave back.

Erika leans in closer, her expression turning serious. Are you ready for this? I heard the first assessment is always a mental grind.”

*LI don’t even know,I admit. My hands are starting to sweat. I just don’t want to fail.

Rafour the can respond, the iron doors at the front of the hall are opened. A tall man with long blond hair and a stern face walks onto the raised platform. The room gues silent almost instantly.

Hello, young wolves, I am Professor Walker,he announces. His voice is loud in the room without him even trying. It is time for your first weekly assessment. Many of you think this is a test of strength. You are wrong.

He walks back and forth, his eyes scanning the crowd.

The challenge is different for every student. The Proving Grounds will reach into your mind and pull out exactly what you fear most. You must face it head-

  1. on. Do not look away. Do not hesitate. If you surrender to the fear, you fail. It is that simple.

He stops pacing and looks directly into the center of the room. It is time. Line up.

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my shaking knees. I feel a strange mix of terror and hope.

This is it. If I can pass this, maybe I can prove that I belong here, even without having a physical wolf.
