Chapter 44
Kai
1 drive my fist into Damon’s jaw with so much force that he stumbles back, but I don’t give him a second to breathe. I move forward and land a heavy blow to his ribs. My knuckles ache, but the physical pain is nothing compared to the noise inside my head.
Lyra Diamond.
Her name is on a loop in my head, haunting me. I try to focus on our fight, to lose myself in the sparring, but it’s impossible. Every time I close my eyes, I
see her silver hair and those wide, terrified blue eyes looking down at me in the kitchen.
I throw another punch, fueled by pure frustration.
I need to know how she did it. I need to understand how a wolfless girl brought me back from the edge of darkness in seconds.
I might be a powerful Lycan, but my heart is a fucking time bomb. It’s the one thing my strength can’t fix. When I was younger, my father committed a
crime so dark and so grave that it demanded blood as payment. He didn’t pay it, though.
A vengeful witch decided that I would be the one to carry the burden of his retribution instead. She placed a sick, twisted spell on my heart.
I am one of the most powerful Lycans in existence, yet my heart can just stop beating at any moment. It is a constant worry in my life.
It has happened twice before. When I was much younger and a few months ago. Both times, I was dead for days. I only came back to life because our Lycan essence grants us a form of immortality that fights to keep the soul tied to our body. It takes time for the body to restart itself after failing.
But last night was different.
Last night, I woke up fast. Too fast. I felt a surge of energy so powerful hat if felt like my blood was on fire. I felt a connection to her, a thread of her life force that pulled me out of the dark and put me back into my body. It was as if she reached into my chest and forced my heart to beat again.
‘She touched us, *** Vlad’s voice growls deep in my mind. ‘Even while we stopped breathing, I felt her. It wasn’t just medicine or luck, Kai. It was her.‘
I agree with him, even if I don’t want to. I am completely confused. Lyra is supposed to be a wolfless omega. She is supposed to be powerless. But as Omega
cannot jumpstart a Lycan’s heart.
“Hey! Kai! I yield! I fucking yield!”
୮
Damon’s voice finally breaks through my muddled thoughts. I instantly stop myself before my fist meets his face. Damon is slumped against the wall of the
sparring room, his nose bleeding and his eyes wide with shoek.
He’s gasping for air, clutching his side. That’s when I realize that I’ve been hitting him with brutal force, over and over, while I was lost in my own thoughts.
I step back and lower my hands. My heart races as I try to get my breathing under control. I feel the heat of Vlad’s anger fading, leaving me with nothing
but a dull, heavy ache in my head.
“Sorry.” I wipe a smear of blood off my knuckles. “I got carried away.”
Damon spits a mouthful of blood onto the mat and glares at me. “Carried away? You almost killed me, dude. What the hell is wrong with you today? You’ve been staring at nothing for the last twenty minutes.”

Chapter 44
I don) answer–him. I grab a towel and wipe the sweat from my fleck, my mind already drifting back to the apartment. I need to talk to Lyra. I need to corner her and make her tell me the truth. If she has some kind of hidden power, she is irr more danger than she realizes. My father would tear her apart to study that kind of ability, and if other packs found out, she would be in even more danger.
“Go get cleaned up, Damon,” I say, my voice flat. “We’re done for today.”
“Is this about your slave girl?” Damon asks as he limps toward the door.
I stiffen. “Don’t call her that.”
1
Damon stops and looks at me with a raised eyebrow. “I thought that’s what you called her? Or did something change while I wasn’t looking?”
I wipe sweat from my brow, my mind still fixated on the way Lyra’s hands felt against my skin. The silence in the room is thick until Damon breaks it.
“Oh shit, you’ve got it bad, don’t you?” Damon spits a blood onto the floor and leans back againya pillar. A smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth. “It seems you already have a thing for the girl. I don’t blame you, Kai. She’s a sight for sore eyes. That silver hair, those eyes… she’s definitely a prize.”
I can’t stop the sudden, violent surge of fury that hits my chest. I glare daggers at him, my hands curling into fists again.
I don’t like the way he says her name. I don’t like the way he’s even thinking about her.
“Don’t fucking talk about her like that,” I growl. My voice is low, vibrating with a possessiveness that surprises even me.
Damon laughs and raises his hands in a mock gesture of surrender. He isn’t intimidated, but he knows when to back off. “Easy, your highness. I don’t mean
any harm. I’m just stating the obvious.”
He wipes his face with a towel and his expression turns serious. He takes a step closer. “But I hope you know what you’re doing. Your father, cannot find out that you have a thing for a girl who is supposed to be your slave. You know how he feels about ‘purity‘ in the bloodline. A wolfless girl? He’d kill her just for
distracting you.”
I stay silent. I don’t have an answer for him because he’s right. My father doesn’t see people, he sees assets and liabilities. To him, Lyra is a liability that should have been erased a while ago. The only reason she’s alive is because I claimed her as my property. If he thinks she is anything more than that, he’ll create problems for her or simply just end her.
Just then, the vibration of my phone on the bench fills the room. I walk over and pick it up. A single text message sits on the screen.
I stare at the name on the display. My jaw tightens.
“Speak of the devil,” I mutter.
Damon tilts his head. “The King?”
