The Lycan Prinee’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance)

Chapter 45

Lyra

My heart is beating so hard in my chest that I’m genuinely scared I will have a heart attack right here. I try to pull a steady breath into my lungs, but the

air in here feels thick and suffocating.

It’s almost time for my moment of truth. This is my first wolf assessment test at Krypton Academy. Every other student around me looks ready for whatever their test will be. People are discussing amongst themselves, talking about how they can’t wait to show the true length of their wolf’s strength.

And then there is me.

I still cannot transform. I reach deep into the back of my mind, searching for that familiar presence.

Wyndra?I call out. Will you come out? I can’t do this as a human, Wyndra. I’ll fail.

No,her voice echoes back. It is still not the time to turn, Lyra. You must trust me.

I want to scream at her. I want to ask her when exactly she thinks the right time will be. If I don’t shift now, I am just a girl in a tshirt and jeans facing a trial designed for predators. But Wyndra remains silent after her warning. She retreats into the back of my mind, leaving me alone with my racing heart.

Professor Walker stands at the front of the hall. He holds a stack of silver cards in his hand. He places them on a wide table and steps back.

Proceed to the table,he commands. His voice is like a crack of a whip. Each of you will take one card. Do not choose. Let the card choose you. Each one is unique to the individual wolf. It is keyed to your blood, your rank, and your spirit. You will face your challenge alone.

Everyone begins to move forward. I join the line, my legs feeling weak. I watch as the others pick up their cards. Some look relieved, while others turn pale the moment their fingers touch the silver card.

When I reach the table, my hand trembles. I reach out and let my fingers brush the cold metal. The card feels strangely warm on my skin, almost like it’s breathing. I hold it tight and step away, joining the back of the crowd.

Everyone, move to the testing chambers,Professor Walker says. He points toward a row of reinforced glass doors at the far end of the hall. Place your

card into the slot. Once the door opens, you have sixty seconds to enter. Your timer begins the moment you step across the threshold.

I look around the room, searching for a familiar face. My eyes find Erika’s. She is standing a few feet away, clutching her card so hard ker knuckles are white. I catch her gaze and mouth Good luck‘. She offers me a weak, shaky smile and mouths it back to me. We both know the ptakes. For her, it’s about rank. For me, it’s about survival.

The line moves quickly. One by one, students disappear behind the glass doors. Some of the doors emit a low sound when they open, others hiss like steam. I watch as Amara and Isolde vanish into their respective chambers, their expressions uncharacteristically grim.

Finally, it is my turn.

I stand in front of the glass slot. My reflection looks back at me. Pale, silverhaired, and terribly small. I look like a lamb walking into a slaughterhouse. I think about Kai’s heart stopping in my lap. I think about the spark of energy that left my body to save him. I need that strength now. I need whatever is hidden inside me to wake up.

Guide me, Goddess,I whisper as I slide the silver card into the slot.

Chapter 45

There is a sharp; mechanical elick immediately my card enters. The glass door doesn’t just slide open, it seems to dissolve into a swirl of mist and shadow. A

inding bright light erupts from the chamber, spilling out into the hall and washing over me. It is so intense that I have to shield my eyes with my arm.

The light is warm, almost inviting, bát underneath the heat, I feel a chill of pure dread. The test is calling for me.
