Chapter 46
I take one last shaky breath and stepforward into the white abyss.
The moment I step through the threshold, the world vanishes. There is no floor beneath my feet, there’s nothing at all.
I’m falling and falling and falling. Until suffocating pressure slams into my chest as I fall underwater.
I thrash my arms wildly, my eyes snapping open to see nothing but darkness. The water is thick like oil, and it blocks my throat the moment I try to open
my mouth.
I can’t breathe. Panic streams through my veins as I realize there is no surface in sight. It feels like I’m drowning in a silent, watery grave.
Then I see them. Dark, Shadowy figures. They look like huge, skeletal wolves with eyes that glow like fire. They’re swimming directly at me, their jaws
hanging open to reveal rows of sharp, terrifying fangs. They look like they’re ready to tear me apart.
I start to kick, my heart hammering in my ribs. I need to get away. I need to find air. My hands wave back and forth in the water, trying to pull myself
upward, but the wolves are faster. They circle me, closing the distance with predatory grace.
‘Do not move.‘
Wyndra’s voice is a sharp command in my skull. It is so loud it vibrates in my teeth.
‘I can’t breathe!‘ I scream back in my mind. My lungs feel like they are about to burst and my vision is beginning to tunnel into blackness. ‘They’re going to
kill me, Wyndra!‘
‘Stay still, Lyra. Don’t fight the dark. Let it come.‘
The urge to flee is so strong. Every instinct I have tells me to run, to fight, to scream until the water fills my lungs and kills me for good. Fear grips my whole body like a vise. I’m about to give up and run, but then, a wave of unnatural calmness washes over me.
It is Wyndra. She is anchoring my mind, holding me steady. I feel her calmness work its way through me like magic.
I stop kicking and let my arms go limp. I stay perfectly still as the wolves lunge for me, opening their mouths wide enough to swallow my head.
I don’t blink or flinch. I just stare at them, waiting for them to come. Let it come…
The first wolf reaches me, its cold breath hitting my skin, and then it shatters. It doesn’t bite. It doesn’t tear. It simply disintegrates into a cloud of dark
dust that fades away into the shadows. The others follow, their terrifying forms fading into nothingness the moment they touch my skin.
That is when the realization hits me. None of this is real.
The wolves are shadows. The water is a lie. The suffocation is just my mind playing tricks on my body. The Proving Grounds didn’t send me into an ocean, it
sent me into my own fear of being helpless and overwhelmed.
I shut my eyes tight. I ignore the burning in my chest and the crushing weight of the water. I open my mind fully, pushing back against the illusion with everything I have. I focus on the cold floor of the academy, on my friends, on the scent of a certain Prince, and on the spark of light hidden deep inside me
“It’s not real,” I whisper in my head.

open my eyes.
The underwater world vanishes in a heartbeat. The darkness dissolves, and the suffocating pressure lifts from my lungs. I drag in a lungful of real air, coughing as my feet find solid ground again,
The mist clears, and the glass door is back in view. I am standing exactly where I started, but the silver card in the slot is now glowing with a steady green
light. Green signifies: Pass
A small, shaky smile spreads across my face. I wipe a stray tear from my cheek and stand up straight, my legs still a bit wobbly. I did it. I didn’t need to
shift. I didn’t need to be a wolf to survive.
I passed my first test.
