Chapter 61

Lyra

I’m sitting in the middle of my first period class, but my mind is miles away.

All I can think about is Roman. I keep picturing him hitting that stone wall, and the image makes my stomach turn.

I hope he is fine. I can’t help how I feel terribly responsible for what happened to him. He was just trying to show me something beautiful, and I brought a storm right to his doorstep.

Since I moved into Kara’s apartment two days ago, I haven’t seen either him or Kai. It’s like they both vanished from the face of the

earth. Surprisingly, no one in the academy is talking about what transpired two nights ago at the Glass House, Usually, gossip about the princes spreads like wildfire, but now, it’s as if everyone is intentionally avoiding the topic. Students don’t even look at me weirdly like they usually do. They just pass me by or look the other way when I walk down the hall.

Something tells me Prince Kai has his hands in this. He might have threatened everyone in the academy to keep their mouths shut. He is the only person with enough power to silence a crowd that large.

My mind drifts back to the way he hauled me over his shoulder outside the dorms. I can’t stop my face from heating up as I remember the sharp, stinging feeling of him spanking me in front of everyone. The memory is a jumbled mess of embarrassment and a strange, buzzing energy I can’t quite identify. I try to brush off the feeling, but the ghost of his hand on my skin sticks with

“Anyone I catch zoning out of my class will be punished severely!”

The teacher’s voice cracks like a whip, making me jump in my seat. I quickly look up and see Professor Vane glaring directly at me. gulp in fear and quickly fix my gaze on my notebook, realizing I must have been staring into space for a long time.

Professor Vane stands at the front of the room, his eyes sharp. “Today, we will learn about channeling your wolves to fight while you are in your physical human form,” he says.

I open my book and start jotting down every point he makes. I need this. If I’m ever going to survive the things Kai or his father have planned, I need to know how to defend myself, even without a shift.

The teacher explains that wolves have been one of the best fighters since the beginning of time. He says the best way to become a truly powerful werewolf is to fight alongside your beast, even when you’re not in your four-legged form. He explains that your wolf is a source of raw, primal energy. When you are in human form, you shouldn’t just rely on your muscles. You have to tap into the wolf’s instincts, their heightened reflexes, their predatory sight, and their endurance.

“The wolf should take the reins,” Vane continues to explain, his voice low and serious. “If you fight as a human, you are limited by human biology. But if you allow your wolf to flow through your veins, your strength triples. You see the world in slow motion. You anticipate your opponent’s move before they even make it. This is how the royal guard survives against impossible odds.”

He goes on at it the Spirit Link,” describing how to pull the beast’s aggression into your fists without losing your mind to the

bloodlust. I write it all down, though it feels a bit pointless to me. I don’t have a wolf to pull from.

I only have my ghost Wyndra, and she’s been silent since the last test. I wonder if I can tap into that strange golden spark/l felt

before, or if I’m just going to be a punching bag for the rest of the class.

After an hour of listening to the lecture and filling my pages with notes, Vane claps his hands together. The sound echoes sharply in

the room, making everyone look up at him at the same time.

“Now that you’ve had the theory, it’s time for the practice,” he announces. “Everyone, get to the locker rooms and change into you gear. We are heading to the combat arena. Today, we play the Arena Games. You will fight each other until only the strongest are

left standing.”

The room quickly fills with excited chatter as my classmates begin high-fiving each other, their competitive instincts already rising to the surface. Amara looks over at me from where she is and gives me a supportive thumbs-up, but I can see the worry in her eyes

too.
