Chapter 63
Lyra
I stand at the edge of the combat mats, my hands shaking so hard I have to tuck them into my armpits to hide it. I watch the pairs of fighters go one by one. It’s a bloodbath.
The strength gap between the he-wolves and the she-wolves is so obvious. Most of the girls are being tossed around like ragdolls. I watch Sarah get slammed into the sand, her face covered in dust as she gasps for air. The males don’t hold back as they use their heavy weight and the predatory speed of their beasts to end the fights in seconds.
However, only two girls have managed to flip the script. One of the level-one girls, a quiet she-wolf named Mia, waits for her opponent to lunge, then she swings with a snarl and lands a kick so hard it sounds like a branch snapping/Her opponent goes down, clutching his ribs and groaning.
Another girl pins down her opponent and punches him until Professor Vane has to pull her off. Seeing them win gives me a touch of
hope, but then I look at Salva. He’s twice my size and has a look in his eyes that says he wants to do more than just win a game. He
wants to destroy me.

“I think you’re up next, Lyra,” Amara whispers. She squeezes my shoulder. “Just try to be fast. Don’t let him corner you.”
“I’ll try,” I say even though I feel terrified.
I step closer to the combat ring, but suddenly, a voice rings
think it had left me for good.

My heart races. “Wyndra?” I whisper under my breath. “You’re back? Where have you been?”
‘I am always here,’ she answers. Her voice is like velvet and ice. ‘But you must listen to me now. You are trying to fight like a human. You are trying to use muscles that are weak. You must give up control.”
What are you talking about?” I ask, feeling confused as I walk toward the center of the arena. “I don’t have a wolf form to give control to. You know that. I’m wolfless.”
‘You are not wolfless,’ Wyndra says, her tone becoming more intense. You are simply blocked. You must channel me. Stop trying to lead. Stop trying to think. Let me take control of your body. Let the fire in your blood burn away the fear.”
I don’t know how to do that!” I cry out internally. “I’ve never done it
Lyra, you have the spirit of a Phoenix White, Wyndra says after a moment of silence. That is why you are different. That is why the Lycan blood reacts to you.’
A Phoenix Where? What does that even mean? I demand. “Wyndra, talk to me!”

Chapter 63
She doesn’t answer me. The connection goes cold again. I call out her name in my mind over and over, but there is no response. She leaves me standing right in front of Salva, more confused and frustrated than I was before.
I take my place in the center of the ring, but as I look around, I realize the audience has changed. It’s not just the level-one students anymore. A group of higher-level wolves has walked into the arena to watch the matches. My breath freezes when I see
them.
Princess Kara is there, looking worried as she leans against the railing. Standing next to her is Princess Rina, who has a smirk on
her face like she’s about to watch a comedy show. And then, there is Prince Kai.
He is standing tall, his arms crossed over his chest. He looks as powerful and cold as the night he threw me over his shoulder. Our gazes clash for a second, and the tension is so thick I can almost taste it. I haven’t seen him since he locked me in my room 48 hours ago. I didn’t think he’d show up here. My face heats up with the memory of his hand on me, and I quickly look away.
I wish they weren’t here. I don’t want the royal family to watch me get beaten into the dirt by a bully like Salva. I want to disappear
into the ground.
Salva notices where I’m looking and laughs. “Oh, look at that. The Prince came to watch his slave get beaten. Don’t worry, Lyra. I’ll make sure to give him a good show.” he says loud enough for only me to hear.
“Shut up, Salva,” I snap even though my knees are trembling.
“Make me,” he taunts. He raises his fists, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “You think because you’re the Prince’s favorite toy, you’re special? You’re nothing. You’re just a wolfless bitch who doesn’t matter.”
Professor Vane raises the horn to his lips. “Ready…”
I raise my hands, trying to mimic the defensive pose the teacher showed us earlier. My heart is beating against my ribs like a trapped bird.
‘Give up control, Wyndra’s voice echoes one last time, very faintly.
The horn sounds. A loud blast that signals the start of the fight.
Salva doesn’t waste a second. He lunges at much faster than I expected. I try to clos my mind is too loud. All I can think about

Don’t run, you little rat!” Salva yells.
He swings again, and this time, his fist connects with my shoulder. I let out a cry as the force of the blow sends me spinning. My shoulder feels like it’s been hit by a sledgehammer. I try to stabilize myself, to breathe through the pain, but Salva is already on me again.
“Is that all?h mocks. I haven’t even used my wolf strength yet.

I try to strike back, throwing a desperate punch at his face, but he catches my wrist with ease. He sneers at me, his eyes turning red as he taps into his beast.
“My turn, he whispers.
