Chapter 71

watch my father clean the blood of his hands with a handkerchief. I find myself searching his fise, wondering when he became this…this dark, insatiable

thing.

When I was a child, I looked up to him. I thought he was the greatest leader in history. I thought he loved me. But the man standing over Richard’s corpse s a stranger. I don’t recognize him at all/

‘Don’t look at me like that, my father says, not bothering to meet my eyes. “It had to be done. He wasn’t trustworthy.”

“He was your Gamma,” I counter, my voice tight. “He was bound to be loyal to you by the pack bond. That is the oldest law we have.”

My father chuckles dryly. “If you keep being emotional about every little thing, Kai, you will never be a good leader. To wield the power of the Crown, one has to set his feelings aside. Emotions are just weights that drag a king down.”

He steps closer, invading my space, and places his hands on my shoulders. His grip is firm, almost patronizing. Which is precisely way I can’t allow you to keep that toy you are so attached to. Things like that make you lose your purpose.”

The comment is my final straw. All the anger I’ve been holding in bursts out like a stretched wire snapping. Before I even realize what I’m doing, my hand is already around his throat. I grip tighter and tighter until the skin under my fingers turns purple.

My father’s eyes widen. He looks stunned, like he can’t believe I actually had the guts to touch him.

“She is not a fucking toy!” I scream the words directly into his face. My lungs burn with the intensity of my hatred. “And you had better call off your dogs

right now. Tell them to stay far away from her, because if I find them anywhere near Kara’s place, I will eat them all for dinner.”

I shove him back hard enough to make him stumble into his desk. Without waiting for a response, I turn my back on him and walk away, leaving the man! used to love but now hate, standing alone in the room with the body of his own Gamma.

I make my way to Kara’s apartment as fast as my legs will carry me. My hands are still clenched into fists, with my knuckles bruised and raw from the confrontation in the office. When I reach Kara’s entrance door, the hallway is empty, and my father’s pathetic guards are nowhere to be found. I was really looking forward to killing them swiftly, to ripping the life out of anyone who dared to threaten her.

I burst through the door, my chest pounding. As soon as I step in, Kara jumps up from the couch and rushes over, wrapping her arms around me in a right hug. I hold her back, my eyes flicking around the room, looking for the silver hair that haunts my every waking moment.

Kara looks up at me, her eyes filled with worry. “I was so scared, Kai. I thought Father would punish you for defending Lyra in front of everyone like that.”

I ignore the question because all I can think of is Lyra. I notice that she is nowhere to be found in the living room. Kara must see the panic in my expression, because she answers before I can even ask.

“She’s sleeping in my room,” Kara explains, her voice dropping. “She’s still in a lot of pain because of the fight she had with that stupid guy.”

I nod and step away from her. I can’t stop my heart from racing as I approach the bedroom door. The house is very quiet. I open the door slowly, moving silently like a predator.

The room is dark, but I can see her sleeping figure clearly. Her silver hair is untied, spread out on the pillow like silk. She’s wearing a pair of pink pajamas that I’m sure belong to Kara. She looks so small and so innocent, that my heart tightens with a feeling I can’t even explain. It’s not just the bond. It’s something deeper, something that makes me want to burn the world down just to keep her safe in this bed.

I take one quiet step toward her, but that’s enough to alert her. Lyra instantly stirs awake and sits up. My jaw clenches when I hear her wince. She’s still in

pain from the fight: The thought of that general’s son laying a finger on her makes my blood run cold. I should probably kill the bastard.

Hello? she whispers into the dark.

She reaches out and turns on the table lamp. As the light fills the room, I can see her clearly now. Her agy lips are no longer bleeding, and she looks like a vision. The moment she sees that it’s me, the frown disappears from her face, and her eyes widen.

“Kai? What are you doing here?” she asks, climbing out of bed and walking toward me. As you… okay? Did your father…”

Her voice trails off as she reaches me. Her eyes roam over my whole body as if she’s searching for any sign of injury. I almost smile at her. She’s the injured one but she’s still trying to make sure I’m okay.

When she puts her hand on my chest and asks me if I’m okay again, I decide that I can’t take it anymore. I can’t hold back the storm inside me.

I lean down and crash my lips onto hers, swallowing her shocked gasp,

I fucking kiss her.
