The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 93

Chapter 93

Lyra

I stutter as I avert my face, my heart hammering against my ribs. “I’m so sorry!” I gasp, the words tripping over each other. “I didn’t mean to… I was just…”

When I realize I can’t even form a proper sentence, I take a step back. “I’ll leave you alone now. I’m sorry.”

“Lyra, wait!” Kara says, stepping forward and reaching out for me. “Wait, can explain.”

“You don’t have to tell me anything, Kara,” I say quickly, still not quite looking at them. “It’s fine. Really

Mia looks terrified. She glances between me and Kara, her chest heaving. “Kara, we’re in trouble,” she whispers, her voice tight with panic. “Someone caught us. Do you have any idea what this means if it gets out?”

Kara shakes her head and places a calming hand on Mia’s arm. “No, it’s okay. Lyra is my friend. She’s not going to say anything.”

Mia doesn’t look convinced. She starts to argue, her eyes darting back to me with suspicion, but Kara firmly cuts her off. ‘Just go, Mia. I’ll handle this. I promise.”

They share a long, lingering look-a look full of the kind of longing that only the two of them seem to understand. Watching them, I feel a little pang of envy in my chest. I wish I could have something like that with someone. I wish I could look at someone and know exactly what they’re thinking without a word being said. Mia gives me one last suspicious look before she finally turns and walks away, disappearing back toward the main hall.

After Mia leaves, the silence in the hallway is loud. Kara steps toward me, smoothing down her black dress. She looks incredibly awkward, shifting her weight from foot to foot.

“So, um…” she starts, clearing her throat. “That… whatever you just saw… it’s not that serious, okay? I know it’s unexpected. And probably really awkward for you to see me like that.”

“Kara, you don’t-”

“I just have a thing for girls sometimes,” she interrupts, her voice dropping. She stares at me with a vulnerable, almost scared look, as if she’s waiting for me to turn away in disgust or start judging her. “I know it’s not exactly the Royal way to behave.”

I look at her for a moment, seeing the genuine fear in her eyes. I reach out and take her hand, squeezing it gently. “Kara, it’s fine. Seriously. I’m actually glad to see you involved with someone who makes you feel that excited. You looked… happy.”

The tension leaves her shoulders in a rush. She lets out a breath she’s been holding. “Really? You’re not weirded out?”

“Not at all,” I tell her. I pause for a second, my curiosity getting the better of me. “But… is Mia your fated mate?”

Kara chuckles and shakes her head. “Of course not. We haven’t felt any kind of pull like that.”

“What about the mate bond, then? How will you handle it if the Moon Goddess picks someone else? Especially if it’s a male?

Kara straightens her clothes and shrugs. It all depends on the Moon Goddess, I guess. If she chooses a female or a male as my fated nate, then that’s just how it’s meant to be. I’ll deal with it when it happens. She grins then, the old Kara coming back. “But for now, Mia and I are just attracted to each other. It’s nothing too deep. Besides, she’s a great kisser.”

I shake my head, a small laugh escaping fie. “You are such a funny princess.”

Kara giggles, and the tension is completely gone now.

As we both turn to leave the hidden corner and head back toward the direction of the party, Kara suddenly stops me. She pulls me to face her, her expression turning dead serious.

“Lyra, I’m serious,” she says in a low voice. “You shouldn’t tell anyone about this. Please. My father, the King… he wouldn’t understand. Neither would the Council.”

“I promise,” I say firmly. “I won’t tell a soul. Your secret is safe with me.”

“Tell anyone what?”

A deep, booming voice echoes from behind me, making me jump nearly a foot into the air. I spin around to find Prince Kai standing there, his arms crossed over his chest. He looks like a shadow in the dim hallway, his eyes narrowed as he watches us.
