Chapter 94
Kai raises an eyebrow, looking completely unconvinced. Before he can say another word or press is for details, Kara grabs my arm and starts dragging me forward toward the hall.
“Anyway, bye!” she shouts over her shoulder to her brother. ‘See you later, Kai!”
She doesn’t stop running until we’re back in the crowd, leaving K standing alone in the hallway.
The air in the hall changes as the minutes go by. The bonfire is now booming, the sparks dancing toward the open ceiling where the moon has finally turned a deep, blood red. The atmosphere is electric.
I spot Amara and Isolde near the edge of the dance floor, both of them are busy taking pictures of the red moon with their phones. All around us, students are doing the same, while some others are wandering through the crowd with searching eyes, hoping to finally see their fated mates.
One of our professors steps up to the podium and grabs a microphone. “Hello great He and she-wolves! The red moon has reached its peak!” he announces.
A The crowd erupts with cheers and excitement. People clink their glasses and chat eagerly with each other. You can practically feel the power and the blessings of the Moon Goddess vibrating through the air. I close my eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath, and suddenly, I feel a familiar spark in the back of my mind.
Чуга…”
It’s a weak, distant whine, but it’s her. Wyndra is finally waking up. The Hawthorn poison nearly killed her, and because I’m unable to transform my wolf form, I couldn’t force her out so she could heal properly in her own form like every normal wolf can do. Knowing she’s conscious again brings a surge of relief and joy that almost brings me to tears.
“While the moon is out,” the professor continues, “I expect everyone to begin the search for their other halves. But bear in mind, not everyone will find their mates tonight. It is a gift, not a guarantee.”
I bite my lip, thinking of how unlucky I was in the past. I’m probably part of that unlucky group.
“Lastly,” the professor’s voice turns stern, “no act of violence is permitted. Anyone who hurts a fellow wolf in any way during this sacred event will face
immediate expulsion and possible imprisonment. Enjoy the night.”
Just them, my phone dings, vibrating against my leg. I pull it out to see another message from Erika.
Erika: I’m still waiting for you. If you don’t come now, I won’t be able to tell you later. Please, Lyra.

A knot of worry fills my stomach. I look around the hall and spot a back door that leads toward the gardens. Why is Erika out there all alone? Especially
tonight? I turn to my friends, tapping Amara on the shoulder to get her attention.
“I’m going to go check on Erika,” I tell them, pointing toward the door. ‘She’s outside. I’ll be back soon.”
Amara frowns, looking at the door’s direction with a doubtful look. “Lyra, I don’t think you should be going off by yourself right now. Not when the red
moon is out and half the school is losing their minds.”
My phone buzzes again. It’s just a single word from Erika: Lyra! (!)
I’ll be back soon, I promise, I say, already moving away.

weave through the crowd and push through the back door. When I step out, I find myself in a kind of garden maze. There is hardly any light out here, save for the red glow of the moon reflecting off the leaves.
“Erika?” I call out, my voice sounding small in the vast garden. “Erika, are you here?”
No one answers. I walk deeper into the maze, my heels clicking softly on the stone path. The silence is heavy. She clearly said she was out back, but the garden feels completely empty.
I pull out my phone to text her, when I hear the sound of hurried footsteps approaching from around a corner. I look up, expecting to see Erika’s red hair, but instead, I see Prince Roman walking toward me with a wide, happy smile on his face.
“Roman?” I ask, my brow furrowing in confusion. “What… what are you doing here?”
Roman doesn’t answer right away. He walks straight up to me and takes my hand in his, squeezing it gently. I look down at our joined hands in confusion as I try to make sense of what’s happening.
“I got your message,” Roman says in a voice thick with emotion. “Thanks to your friend for giving me your letter. I couldn’t be happier, Lyra. I’ve been waiting to hear those words from you.”
“Letter?” I repeat, confused. “Roman, I-”
Before I can finish my sentence, Roman leans in and crashes his lips onto mine. I freeze, my eyes wide with shock. His kiss is desperate and full of a joy I don’t share. What’s happening??
For a few seconds, I’m so shocked that I don’t even move. My brain is screaming that this is not happening, but it is.
Roman is kissing me after saying he got my letter. But there was no letter and something is clearly wrong somewhere.
