Chapter 95
Kai
I watch as Lyra walks away, her red dress disappearing into the crowd. Rina is still standing in front of me, her fingers gripping my arm so hard it feels like she wants to break my bone.
“Go after her Kai!’ Vlad roars in my mind, his voice shaking my entire skull. She belongs to us! She is our mate!’
Everything inside me is screaming to do exactly what Vlad says. I want to shove Rina aside and run after Lyra, but a cold spike of fear stops me. I’m terrified of what her reaction will be. I don’t want to see her look at me with that same fear she had in the hospital.
I know she feels the bond. I can see the way her pupils dilate and the way her heart beat races every time I’m close to her. She tries to deny it, but the pull is there. No matter how hard I try to stay away or pretend she’s just a slave, it’s impossible. She’s way more than just my slave. She’s mine.
My thoughts are cut short when I suddenly feel Rina’s hand sliding around my neck. She strokes, Kai,” she whispers, leaning into me as if she wants to kiss me.
my cheek with a manicured nail and pouts. “I missed you,
I look down at her and feel absolutely nothing. No spark, no heat, no pull. Nothing like what I feel when I’m with Lyra Diamond. All I feel right now is a heavy sense of obligation that makes my skin crawl.
*Kai, you realize we only have a few months left, right?” Rina continues, her voice buzzing in my ear like a fly. She’s talking excitedly about the mating
engagement ceremony we’re supposed to have in a few months, listing the things and the decorations she wants. As she speaks, my chest suddenly tightens. The air in the hall feels thin, like I’m actually choking
I realize in that moment that I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep pretending to care about Rina just because our fathers signed a piece of paper years ago. I
don’t want her. I don’t feel anything for her. The thought of spending the rest of my life tethered to her makes me feel like I’m walking into an execution.
I suddenly stop moving. The music is still playing, but I’ve gone completely still. Rina looks at me in confusion, her brow furrowing. “Kai? What’s wrong?”
*I…I have to go,” I say, my voice sounding hollow even to my own ears.
“What? But the red moon-
I don’t wait for her to finish. I ignore her as she calls my name and walk straight off the dance floor. I push through bodies, my heart racing for an entirely
different reason now.
Damon finds me near the edge of the hall, leaning against a pillar with a drink in his hand. He grins when he sees me
“Giving up on your future Queen already?” he jokes, nudging my shoulder. “Rina looks like she’s about to breathe fire.”
1 turn to him, my expression dead serious. The adrenaline is surging through me, making my hands shake. I just…I can’t stop lying to myself, Damon. I can’t lie to her anymore either.”
Damon’s smile freezes. He puts his drink down on a nearby table. What do you mean Kai?”
I take a deep breath, the truth finally clawing its way out of my throat. I look him right in the eye. “Lyra is my mate. She belongs to me.
Damon’s jaw literally drops. He stares at me in total, stunned silence for several seconds.

Texpect him to look worried or tell me I’m insane, but then he suddenly bumps my shoulder with a burst of excitement that nearly knocks me over.
“I knew it!” he says with a huge grin on his face. “It was about time you admitted it, man!’
I pause in surprise, blinking at him. You’re… you’re excited about this?”
“Kai, come on,” he says, laughing. “I’ve seen the way you look at her. Anyone with eyes can see it. I knew whatever was happening between you two wasn’t just some master and slave dynamic. You’ve been gone for her since day one.”
