As Lucia laid out the grim truth, Lady Forrester swayed, nearly collapsing.
"I beg you, Lady Lucia, save my Eleonora," she wept.
"A life-swap of this magnitude requires the victim's consent. That is why she asked if Lady Eleonora was willing, and she agreed," Lucia continued.
Lord Roderick clenched his fists, his eyes burning with unshed tears. "How could my Eleonora have known the true meaning behind those words? She has always been too kind..."
Poppy covered her mouth, sobbing uncontrollably.
"It's all my fault. I should have stopped my lady."
Physician Finch sighed heavily. "You're but a child. What could you have possibly known? Do not blame yourself."
After speaking, he turned his gaze back to Lucia.
Technically, Lady Lucia was only a couple of years older than the maid. How did she possess such terrifying knowledge?
"The old woman's granddaughter wasn't merely sick," Lucia added. "Judging by the severity, she was suffering the backlash of a broken hex."
The old woman was undoubtedly a practitioner of the dark arts.
Upon facing the backlash of her own magic, she had immediately devised this sinister plot to pawn the consequences off on an innocent soul.
A formidable enemy, indeed.
Whitestone, was it? When she had the time, perhaps she would pay the town a visit. If a witch like that was left to roam the earth, there was no telling how many more innocents would die.
Lady Forrester suddenly dropped to her knees in despair, reaching out for Lucia.
Lucia frowned and quickly stepped aside to avoid the gesture.
Seeing her reaction, Lord Roderick immediately rushed forward to pull his wife back to her feet. "My Lady, please, let us speak rationally. Do not do this."
He could tell Lucia despised such desperate displays of subservience.
Tears blurred Lady Forrester's vision. "Lady Lucia, I beg of you. Save my daughter. Please."
