Never in her privileged life had Helena encountered someone so utterly fearless and far more arrogant than herself.
Lucia's deadly accusations echoed endlessly in her mind.
Did His Majesty take her to his bed?
Has House Marsh decided it outranks the royal family?
If those whispers left these gardens, not only would her reputation be shattered, but her father would lock her in the darkest dungeon of their keep!
She shook so violently that the blood rushed straight to her head. The world tilted, her vision blacked out, and she collapsed in a dead faint.
"Helena!"
Aurelia, who was still holding her arm, scrambled in a panic to catch the heavy, unconscious noblewoman.
The two maids, having finally blinked away their dizziness, shrieked at the sight of their fallen mistress. Abandoning Lucia, they rushed over to haul Helena off the grass.
Gwyneth's eyes were wide, her palms slick with cold sweat as she stared at the village girl.
Someone else in the crowd voiced exactly what she was thinking—
"She... she just talked Lady Helena into a swoon!"
Lucia mentally scoffed. Such fragile constitutions.
She sighed softly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard. "You cannot blame me. Lady Helena suffers from an excess of dark humors and a choleric temperament. Furthermore, a dark aura surrounds her forehead today. She clearly crossed paths with an ill omen this morning. Misfortune was bound to find her."
The jaws that had just closed dropped open once more.
What on earth was she talking about?
She had just provoked a highborn lady into unconsciousness, didn't look the least bit frightened, and had the nerve to blame it on bad luck?
"Lucia!" Aurelia snapped back to reality, nearly shrieking. "How could you cause such a disaster the moment you arrive?!"
Her carefully laid schemes hadn't even begun! They hadn't even seen Princess Corinna or Seraphina Marquis yet, and Lucia had already eliminated her primary weapon!
"You were the one who invited me," Lucia pointed out with an expression of total innocence.
Helena's maids glared venomously at the sisters. "Our lord will not let House Beaumont get away with this! Just you wait!"
