Lucia's gaze swept across Princess Corinna and Seraphina Marquis. Both women possessed highborn destinies, yet their paths were shadowed by turbulence and hidden variables.
A person's fate shifted constantly with their choices. Those with unremarkable lives were easy to read from beginning to end, but those with turbulent paths were entirely unpredictable.
Not that Lucia cared much about the shifting fates of others. She only bothered to look if someone's aura indicated a positive connection to her own—in simple terms, whether they could get along.
It was just like House Beaumont. She refused to even pretend to call them family. One glance at their twisted auras told her she would never have a peaceful relationship with them in this lifetime, so why waste breath putting on a show?
"Why are you all gathered here? Did something happen?" Princess Corinna asked, feigning confusion as she arrived.
The ladies were huddled together, clearly indicating a commotion. Usually, the nobility scattered into their own small, exclusive circles.
"Your Highness, there was quite a scene just now," a long-faced noblewoman said, her tone sour. "We have a new face among us today, and she lacks even the most basic manners."
Princess Corinna had pretended not to see Lucia at first. She looked directly at Aurelia. Aurelia had sent her a missive two days prior, mentioning she would bring her newly returned sister to the gathering. Corinna was well acquainted with her and knew House Beaumont had brought back their second daughter from the remote provinces.
Aurelia had outlined her plan, even mentioning Seraphina. Corinna understood the game perfectly. Aurelia wanted to parade Lucia before the highborn ladies to be mocked, allowing Seraphina a chance to vent her frustrations. Corinna had naturally agreed. She appreciated Aurelia's tact.
Corinna had deliberately arrived late with Seraphina in tow. She wanted Aurelia to lead Lucia into the firing line first, letting the other ladies tear her down. Once the provincial girl had her spirit broken and her heart filled with terror, Corinna and Seraphina would swoop in to deliver the final, devastating blow. The thrill of crushing a defeated enemy was intoxicating.
