Seraphina's shoulders relaxed slightly.
Princess Corinna was absolutely right.
The queen mother would never permit such a union. It was only the mourning period for the old king that kept the queen mother occupied, but this betrothal would inevitably be shattered.
Still, forcing Lucia to abandon the match early would be the greatest relief. Every day this provincial girl carried the title of the future Princess Consort was another day of sheer agony for Seraphina.
How dare a filthy village girl have her name spoken in the same breath as Prince Jareth!
"Well, Your Highness, to speak truthfully, my parents know she reached far above her station, but she simply refuses to be disciplined," Aurelia said with practiced distress. She tugged at Lucia's sleeve. "Lucia, Her Highness is trying to guide you. Please, just listen to reason."
Lucia had remained silent the entire time, simply observing Corinna and Seraphina to gauge their threat level.
Now that she had seen them in action, she was thoroughly disappointed.
Were these really the terrifying nobles of the Royal Capital?
She spoke, her tone perfectly flat. "You want me to end the betrothal? Do you honestly think Prince Jareth would accept that? A proud royal prince, publicly rejected by a lowly village girl? What if he feels his honor has been insulted?"
Lucia had no patience for this game. A single sentence was all it took to corner them.
Instantly, the color drained from the faces of the noblewomen.
Corinna bit her lower lip, glancing nervously at Seraphina.
The logic was flawless—Prince Jareth had personally requested the royal edict. He would never tolerate the humiliation of being cast aside by Lucia.
An image of Prince Jareth's cold, unyielding face flashed in Seraphina's mind, and a pang of sorrow hit her chest.
"Then you will go to his estate and beg at his gates!" Princess Corinna demanded, struck by a sudden idea. "You will throw yourself at his mercy and confess that you are baseborn, uneducated, and devoid of virtue. Tell him your honor is ruined, that you are entirely unworthy to be his Princess Consort, and beg him to release you!"
Aurelia's eyes lit up. "Your Highness is brilliant! That is the perfect solution."
