"I'll take the stones to the smith to be pierced," the maid offered.

It was true; they couldn't be strung without a hole. But the two small, green stones were beautiful, gleaming like polished glass.

Lucia Beaumont casually pulled a hair pin from Bonnie's hair. Using the sharp tip, she pressed it against the stone.

She pierced one, then the other, punching neat, tiny holes straight through the solid rock.

Bonnie and Celia stared, their eyes wide with shock.

Wait, Lady Lucia had no combat training or magical strength, did she? Neither of them could have managed such a feat!

"I'll go weave the bracelet immediately," Bonnie said, hurrying off to find colored thread.

Lucia washed her face with cold water from the basin and cast a flat look at the stale crust of bread left for her breakfast.

"My Lady, should I send word to Prince Jareth?" Celia asked. "His Highness would surely seek justice for you."

Lucia shook her head. "No need. Help me outside for a walk. I'm going to pick up some coins."

Pick up coins?

Celia was utterly confused.

Still, she obediently offered her arm, guiding Lucia out the door.
