They had made so much noise she couldn't even sleep properly.
Celia and Bonnie quickly nodded. "Yes, my lady. We know what to do from now on."
Lucia glanced at the courtyard entrance. "Go fix that gate. Install a sturdy iron latch. From now on, when I sleep, that gate stays locked tight."
She wouldn't allow a single soul to set foot in her courtyard.
"Yes, my lady."
Since Lucia was fully awake now and unable to drift back to sleep, she went to inspect the items left in the side chamber.
"I heard these were gifts from Matron Cecily?" she asked, having caught snippets of conversation earlier.
"Yes," Celia answered. "Matron Cecily was His Highness's wet nurse. When the Prince left the royal palace, she came with him and has managed his estate ever since."
That meant Matron Cecily held significant authority within the Prince's Estate.
"If Prince Jareth finds out she gave these to me, he won't demand them back, will he?" Lucia ran a hand over a bolt of cloth. She didn't know what kind of fine weave this was, but it felt incredibly soft, and the colors were brilliantly vivid.
It seemed this Matron Cecily was rather kind. She hadn't been angry that Lucia had kept the two maidservants she had carefully trained, and had even taken the initiative to send such lavish gifts.
"His Highness probably wouldn't do that, would he?" Celia and Bonnie weren't entirely sure of Jareth's temperaments either. Still, they felt a prince wouldn't be so petty. "Since Matron Cecily sent them, she must have known His Highness wouldn't mind."
"Hmm. Then I must send Matron Cecily a gift in return." Lucia was never one to take without giving.
She asked a few questions about Matron Cecily's condition, then ordered Bonnie to go into the city to buy ochre parchment, red ink, and a quill. "If you can, find a few plain stone amulets. Ordinary quality is fine."
If she wanted high-quality ones, she would have to pick them out herself.
