Lavinia placed her phone face down on the table.

After dinner, the group headed downstairs.
Charley offered to take Latham and Mandy back to the hospital, but Mandy suddenly grabbed Saul's arm. "Saul can take us back. You two go out and have some fun."
"Mom, I'm young too," Saul protested.
She shot him a withering glare. "You're a grown man, act like one."
As they stepped out of Luk Teahouse, Lavinia noticed the Maybach was already idling by the curb. Zoey Wallace was standing by the door, holding Nemo on a leash and waving enthusiastically. "Over here!"
Lavinia's eyes lit up. She hurried over. "Zoey, what are you doing here?"
Zoey winked. "I brought Nemo along for the ride."
Mandy asked, "Is this your friend, Lavinia?"
"She's my assistant," Lavinia explained with a smile. "I've had a lot of business to take care of on the island lately, so I asked her to come help."
Zoey chimed in cheerfully, "Are you heading back? I can drive."
Mandy looped one arm through her husband's and grabbed Saul with the other. "Ms. Wallace, could you please take the three of us back to the hospital first? Let Lavinia and Charley enjoy their evening."
Once the older couple was sent off, Charley placed the leash in Lavinia's hand. "Let's go for a walk."
"I'd love that," she said, looking up at him with bright, shining eyes.
They strolled down Hollywood Road. It wasn't too crowded, the streets lined with antique shops and traditional herbal tea stalls. Nemo trotted proudly ahead of them, his tail wagging side to side.

Garnett stood by the side of the road, lighting a cigarette and taking a deep drag.
He watched Lavinia and Charley walking the dog until they disappeared around the corner. The sight of the golden retriever made his stomach churn.
Last time at Windward Peak, she had been walking the exact same dog. Charley's dog.
He was using a pet to anchor her to him. How was that any different from a woman using a child to trap a man?
For someone who had essentially stolen another man's wife, Charley's tactics were more manipulative than any homewrecker he had ever encountered. Lavinia must have been completely blind to choose such a despicable man.
Garnett crushed his cigarette out viciously.
His phone rang. It was Joel Sprague.
Joel had recently been promoted to a senior director position and was in the city with the mayor for trade negotiations. Tonight was his first free evening.
