The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 397

The day they visited the Gilmore family on Marina Island, the weather was beautiful.

The Gilmore estate was situated on Bay Road, nestled against the hills and facing the ocean. The car rolled into the courtyard and parked in front of the main house. It was a sprawling, British colonial-style mansion with white walls and a dark gray pitched roof.

Lavinia stepped out onto the gravel driveway. Looking up, she watched the ivy leaves fluttering in the breeze. The air smelled of white orchids.

A man stood under the portico by the main entrance. He wore a casual beige linen blazer and was watching her from a distance.

She didn't need to see his face clearly. The aura of effortless arrogance was unmistakable. It was Garnett.

He looked like he had lost some weight.

Lavinia didn't acknowledge him. She averted her eyes, walked around to the trunk, and pulled out the gifts she had brought.

She stacked the four boxes together and hugged them to her chest.

"Let me help you with that," Garnett said, suddenly materializing beside her.

"I'll take them." A deeper voice spoke from her other side.

She turned and handed the boxes to Charley.

Garnett flinched. He had been so focused on Lavinia that he hadn't even noticed Charley was there.

"Did you come out here just to greet us, Mr. Harper? How thoughtful," Charley said, his manners impeccably sharp.

Us.

Garnett tried to keep his temper in check, but the venom slipped out the moment he opened his mouth. "What are you doing here?"

Lavinia had been walking ahead with her purse over her arm. Hearing this, she stopped, glanced over her shoulder, and asked coldly, "Are you trying to act like the master of the house here, too?"

Garnett's jaw snapped shut.

Charley smiled warmly. "I'm here to accompany my girlfriend, of course."

Every word out of his mouth set Garnett off. "Her husband is right here. Why would she need you? Don't you feel like a third wheel?"

Charley raised an eyebrow. "Are you implying that an ex-husband still counts as a husband?"

"Compared to 'boyfriend', doesn't 'ex-husband' carry a bit more authority?" Garnett shot back.
