The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 103

Jocelyn didn't understand what he meant.

But she couldn't be bothered to ask. She chalked it up to a kid talking tough.

She turned and walked back inside. Just as she was about to close the front door, Eleanor's harsh voice drifted over. It was a complete 180 from the warm, amiable persona she had put on just moments ago.

Now, Eleanor's tone was dripping with contempt.

"Well, this is a surprise. Diana hasn't set foot in this house in three years, and now she suddenly remembers where we live."

"Did you really think she just 'dropped by' to see you? She came specifically for you."

"The Evans family is falling apart, and now she wants to cling to the Lowell family for support. She even brought her precious son to suck up to you. It's blatantly obvious she's trying to butter you up so you'll pave the way for her boy."

"When the Evans family was doing well, I never saw your mother-in-law act so subservient."

"I despise people like her from the bottom of my heart. Does she really think that just because she married her daughter into the Lowell family, she can use her to get what she wants?"

"Her daughter doesn't even have a voice in this house, yet she thinks she can ride our coattails?"

From start to finish, Adrian didn't say a single word in Jocelyn's defense.

Jocelyn's grip tightened on the doorknob until her knuckles ached.

She was genuinely afraid that if she lost control for even a second, she would storm in there and slap Eleanor across the face.

Soon, Eleanor changed the subject.

"The company has lost several key engineers recently. I think someone is pulling strings behind the scenes."

"Adrian, you need to look into this carefully. See if there's a mole in the company helping that Julian Vance poach your people."

Only then did Adrian speak. "I'm on it, Grandma."

Jocelyn stood outside in the freezing air for a few more moments before stepping back in. It was the only way she could suppress the explosive anger threatening to spill over.

Adrian's concern, when he saw her, seemed genuine. "Why were you out there so long? And didn't I tell you to wear a coat?"

Adrian immediately pulled her into a tight hug. "Jocelyn, once this busy period is over, let's go on a honeymoon."

Jocelyn stiffened. "Why bring up a honeymoon?"

"Consider it your reward?" he said.

Her arms hung limply at her sides. She found his embrace repulsive, but she couldn't push him away. "There's no need. You're so busy. If you have time off, you're better off resting at home."

She was suddenly sick of living this passive, reactive life. Two months felt like an eternity right now.

Adrian finally let her go, but affectionately tapped the tip of her nose. "My wife is getting more and more considerate."

That word, 'wife', sent a chill skittering over her skin.

Just as Adrian leaned in for a 'reward' kiss, Jocelyn blurted out, "Adrian, I want to go see Leo."

It worked like a charm. Adrian looked absolutely thrilled.
