The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 117

The moment Michelle's vicious words landed, the doorbell chimed.

A maid hurried over to open the door. Finding a middle-aged man she didn't recognize standing on the porch, she asked bluntly, "Who are you?"

The man smiled politely. "I'm here to see Mrs. Eleanor Lowell."

"It's the middle of the night. Why are you looking for the old madam? Who exactly are you?"

The man simply handed her a business card. "Please give this to Mrs. Lowell."

The maid reluctantly took it.

Two minutes later.

Eleanor was practically jogging toward the front door.

"Commissioner Davis!" Eleanor exclaimed, her plotting, venomous expression completely replaced by a beaming, ingratiating smile. "Oh my goodness, Commissioner Davis. I am so sorry. To have you personally visit us at this hour..."

It was none other than the city's police chief, Commissioner Davis, who had recently been transferred to Northwood City.

Countless people had tried to curry favor with him, only to be turned away at the door. Eleanor herself had used several connections to request a meeting, but she had never succeeded.

For the man to personally show up at their home tonight was completely beyond anything Eleanor could have expected.

"I apologize for the late intrusion. I hope I'm not disturbing you, Mrs. Lowell."

"Not at all! It's an honor to have you here tonight. Please, Commissioner, come inside!"

She didn't forget to whisper to Michelle. "Quick! Go get Adrian. Tell him we have a very important guest."

Michelle, looking utterly confused, hurried upstairs.

Eleanor had the staff serve their absolute best tea.

Commissioner Davis got straight to the point.

"I'm here regarding the charity auction tonight."

Eleanor sat rigidly, listening with the utmost respect.

"Your Momentum AI made a twenty-million-dollar donation tonight. It completely exceeded our expectations and helped us solve a massive, urgent crisis. I came to personally thank you on behalf of the children with cerebral palsy who desperately needed those funds for treatment."

Eleanor, who had been internally agonizing over that twenty million dollars all night, suddenly felt completely at peace.

Who would have thought that twenty million would buy them a personal visit from the Commissioner of Police? Their network of influence was about to expand significantly.

Eleanor immediately smoothed her expression, pretending to gently scold him. "Adrian, really. Why didn't you ask Jocelyn to come down with you?"

Adrian felt an undeniable wave of relief. "I'll go get her right now."

Meanwhile, down in the cellar.

Jocelyn had curled herself into a tight ball on the sofa. It was the only way she could retain a shred of body heat.

But this wasn't sustainable. She was genuinely afraid she might freeze to death down here tonight.

"Jocelyn."

She thought she was hallucinating. Even if she was, it shouldn't be Adrian's terrible voice she was hearing.

Adrian hurried over to the sofa. "Why are you zoning out? Come with me. Commissioner Davis is here, and he wants to see you."

Jocelyn was completely bewildered. "Commissioner Davis?"

"Don't ask questions right now. Just come upstairs."

Without waiting for an answer, he grabbed her arm and pulled her up. Jocelyn didn't fight him, letting him lead her away.
