Fine. At least she could go upstairs and thaw out.
When Commissioner Davis saw Jocelyn, he greeted her warmly.
"You must be Mrs. Lowell."
Jocelyn blinked, slightly caught off guard.
Eleanor quickly prodded her. "Child, what are you standing there for? Say hello to the Commissioner!"
Jocelyn was quick to put the pieces together. This 'Commissioner Davis' was clearly an incredibly powerful man. That's why Eleanor had completely changed her tune.
"Hello, Commissioner Davis. I'm Jocelyn."
She deliberately avoided using the title 'Mrs. Lowell'.
Davis's smile grew a fraction warmer. "Ah, you can tell right away you're an intelligent, gracious young woman. Although... you're in your own home, yet you're still wearing your evening gown. You'd better be careful not to catch a cold."
Jocelyn shot Eleanor a pointed look. "Things were a bit chaotic when we got home. I haven't had the chance to change."
Eleanor guiltily averted her eyes.
"Mrs. Lowell, having a granddaughter-in-law like her is a true blessing," Davis said to Eleanor.
Eleanor was fuming internally, but forced herself to nod enthusiastically. "Yes, absolutely. We're very lucky to have her in the family."
Davis turned his attention back to Jocelyn. "There's an awards ceremony at City Hall tomorrow for the charity drive. It works out perfectly. The two of you should attend together, and we'll have the news stations do a brief interview."
"We'd be honored. Thank you, Commissioner," Jocelyn replied.
Her instincts told her she wouldn't be spending the rest of the night locked in the wine cellar. Commissioner Davis couldn't have arrived at a better time.
For once, luck had landed squarely on her side.
Everything that had happened tonight had wildly exceeded Jocelyn's expectations. All these seemingly unrelated events somehow felt tethered together.
Was it really just a coincidence?
"Alright, I've taken up enough of your time. I should be going," Davis announced.
Eleanor personally escorted him to the door, maintaining a fawning, subservient smile the entire way.
Though Jocelyn found the display pathetic, she understood it. In their world, business and politics were deeply intertwined. Having the backing of a heavyweight like Davis would open countless doors for the Lowells.
Just as Commissioner Davis was about to leave, he suddenly paused and turned around.
So, even though it killed her, she had to let it go.
"Grandma, you're not punishing me anymore?" Jocelyn asked.
"We'll let tonight's incident slide for now," Eleanor said stiffly.
"Slide?"
Adrian hastily tried to smooth things over. "Jocelyn, Grandma is forgiving you. Say thank you."
"Thank you?" Jocelyn scoffed. "She slaps me across the face, shoves a piece of stale candy in my mouth, and I'm supposed to say thank you?"
"Jocelyn!" Adrian hissed softly. "Don't push your luck. She's giving you an out. Take it and drop it."
Jocelyn shoved Adrian's hand away and stared directly at Eleanor.
"I'll go tomorrow on one condition. You all have to apologize to me."
Michelle instantly exploded. "Jocelyn! Are you out of your mind?! Grandma already let you off the hook, and you actually have the nerve to demand an apology?!"
"No," Jocelyn said, her eyes sweeping coldly over the entire family. "Not just Grandma. Every single one of you is going to apologize to me."
