Eleanor didn't have a response for a long time.
She was now entirely convinced that Jocelyn wasn't the one who had beaten Claire.
If she were guilty, she would never have the audacity to speak to them this way.
But Eleanor couldn't just agree to her terms easily.
If she did, she would actually have to apologize. As the matriarch of the Lowell family, when had Eleanor ever bowed her head to a junior?
The atmosphere in the room grew suffocatingly tense.
No one spoke.
"Jocelyn."
Audrey suddenly appeared, slipping seamlessly into her usual role as the fragile, helpless victim.
Jocelyn glanced at her and felt a wave of exhaustion.
"Jocelyn, I believe you. I know you definitely didn't hurt Claire. There has to be a misunderstanding," Audrey said softly.
"Grandma and Mom only punished you because they were acting out of love and desperation for Claire. Please, just think of this from a mother's point of view and let it go."
Jocelyn gave a half-smile. "You're quite good at playing the saint."
"Jocelyn," Audrey's eyes welled with tears. "I know that ever since I used Adrian's sperm, you've held a grudge against me. But please, don't take your anger toward me out on Grandma, Mom, and Adrian."
"If you need to vent, if you want to hit someone or scream at someone, take it out on me. I'm right here. No matter what you do, I won't fight back. I just beg you... please don't make the family suffer anymore."
"Grandma is getting older, and she can't handle this kind of stress. She's worked so hard for this family. We should be considerate of her as her juniors."
Oh, she's clever.
Jocelyn knew exactly what Audrey was doing. Stepping in as the martyr now was a smart move. It would only make Eleanor and Michelle love her more.
"Jocelyn, if you really can't let this go, then I will apologize on behalf of Grandma and the rest of the family. Will that work?"
Jocelyn knew she was being backed into a corner.
Audrey was trying to corner her and leave her no way out.
Fine. If Audrey wasn't going to give her a way out, she would stand her ground.
Jocelyn's lips curved into a cold, hollow smile.
"Sure. Since you're so sincere, go ahead and apologize."
Audrey bit her lip.
"If I kneel and admit fault... will tonight's incident really be swept under the rug?"
Jocelyn's eyes swept over Eleanor and Michelle.
"Whether it's swept under the rug is up to Grandma and Mom. What if they still insist I'm the one who beat Claire?"
Michelle looked like she was ready to detonate.
This woman was utterly despicable. She had to find a way to banish her from the Lowell family as quickly as possible.
"Until the truth is brought to light, we will not falsely accuse anyone," Eleanor stated coldly.
Jocelyn sneered internally.
The old woman was a master at protecting her image. She played the judge, jury, and executioner whenever it suited her.
The moment Eleanor finished speaking, there was a heavy thud.
Audrey dropped to her knees.
