Jeremy instinctively ducked behind Diana.
"Hit him one more time and see what happens!" Diana shrieked. "You are completely out of control!"
Jocelyn didn't give her an inch.
"And if I hit him, what are you going to do about it? Are you going to hit me back?"
"If you dare lay another hand on Jeremy, you bet your life I will!" Diana threatened.
"Try me," Jocelyn sneered.
Seeing the absolute contempt and fearlessness on Jocelyn's face, Diana's confidence suddenly wavered.
"What could your brother have possibly done to justify you tearing into him like that?! Explain yourself this second, or so help me, I'm not letting this slide!"
Jocelyn pointed the feather duster straight at Jeremy.
"Tell her yourself!"
Jeremy had already figured out exactly why he was getting hit.
Surprisingly, there wasn't a trace of anger on his face. Instead, he flashed a cocky, unapologetic smirk.
"My dearest sister, I did all of that for you. Didn't you realize?"
"I didn't ask you to get involved!"
Furious, Jocelyn threw the feather duster on the floor.
"Do you have any idea what the consequences of doing that are?! If you want to get yourself killed, fine, but don't drag the whole family and Dad down with you!"
Jeremy just looked at her, clearly enjoying getting a rise out of her.
"Wow! And here I thought you didn't care about this family anymore."
Jocelyn's chest tightened, and the words slipped out before she could stop them.
"I might not care about this family, but I care about Dad."
Those words nearly brought tears to Marcus's eyes.
"Jeremy, what kind of trouble did you cause to make your sister this angry?" Marcus asked.
Diana finally registered what Jocelyn had just said.
It hit her then.
Her adopted daughter had long since lost any emotional attachment to this family, and she certainly didn't care about her adoptive mother at all.
Diana truly couldn't comprehend it.
"But I thought you..."
She didn't dare finish the sentence.
Saying it out loud would be too cruel.
But Jocelyn finished it for her.
"I thought you always hated me. Why the sudden urge to stand up for me? You bullied me plenty yourself."
Jeremy casually bent down and picked up the discarded feather duster.
"I can dislike you. I can bully you. But she can't. If it happens behind my back, fine, but having the audacity to act like that right in front of my face? If I didn't teach her a lesson, people would think the Evans family is full of cowards."
"You..."
Jocelyn was so furious she couldn't even speak.
She took several deep breaths before finally finding her voice.
"Did you ever stop to think what would happen to this family if the Lowells found out it was you?!"
