The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 142

She didn't want to be consumed by hatred, but she couldn't help it.

The baby nurse was the only one in the room.

Jocelyn pushed the door open.

Seeing her, the nurse quickly stood up to greet her.

"Ma'am."

Jocelyn's eyes darted toward the baby, who was sleeping soundly.

"You've been working hard."

"Ma'am, what brings you here?" the nurse asked.

"I came to check on the baby. How is he doing?"

"He's doing alright. It's not too serious, but he does need an IV drip every day. It's heartbreaking to watch."

"Thank you for your hard work."

"It's my job."

Jocelyn casually steered the conversation. "Where is everyone else? Why are you the only one here?"

"Grandma Lowell and the others went home," the nurse replied.

"Have you been the only one watching him these past two days?"

"Pretty much."

That was definitely strange.

Eleanor was old and didn't have the stamina for hospital vigils.

Michelle was completely self-absorbed and unreliable by nature.

Adrian had to go to the company every day and needed his sleep.

Jocelyn could find perfectly good excuses for why those three weren't here.

But as the baby's own mother, Audrey playing the absentee parent was a bit too convenient...

Jocelyn casually slid open a bedside drawer.

Unfortunately, there was nothing inside.

"By the way, I completely forgot—what's my nephew's blood type again?"

The nurse was simple-minded and didn't suspect a thing.

"I think he's Type A."

Adrian was AB, and Audrey was B.

If the baby was Type A, that actually lined up perfectly.

The nurse let out a tired yawn.

Seizing the opportunity, Jocelyn said, "Why don't you get some sleep? I can keep an eye on him for a while."

The nurse hesitated. "It's okay. I can manage."

"The baby is fast asleep, nothing is going to happen," Jocelyn reassured her. "Close your eyes for a bit. You're going to have to stay up through the night anyway."

The nurse realized she had a point.

She needed the paycheck.

Besides, the job was almost over anyway. Once Audrey’s initial recovery was over, her contract would be up.

She didn't want any trouble.

She would just bite her tongue and endure it.

"Get out!" Audrey shrieked.

Cursing internally, the nurse walked out and shut the door behind her.

Once they were alone, Audrey's expression shifted, twisting into a calculating, malicious smirk.

"Jocelyn, after all this time, you just can't let it go, can you?"

Jocelyn watched her impassively. "Let what go?"

Before Jocelyn could react, Audrey suddenly reached right into Jocelyn's pocket.

"What is this?"

Jocelyn realized Audrey had seen what she was about to do.

"Jocelyn," Audrey snarled, her true, vicious colors showing. "You forced my hand."

Before Jocelyn could process the threat, Audrey grabbed the baby's tiny hand and jammed the blood lancet right into his finger.

She didn't show a single ounce of hesitation or maternal instinct.

She was perfectly willing to hurt her own child just to set a trap.
