The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 183

Audrey asked nervously, "Do you know who it is?"

"Not yet," Caleb admitted grimly. "But whoever it is, they are seriously connected. To have that kind of leverage, to casually reach right into the heart of our corporation, and to mobilize both political and business forces in such a short amount of time... that's not something just anyone can pull off."

The Preston Corporation had suffered massive financial blows in just a few days, pushing Caleb to the brink. But publicly, he had to keep putting up a strong front, acting as if it were a minor hiccup.

He gritted his teeth. "Audrey, think hard. Besides Liam Bancroft, is there anyone else around that woman who looks like a major player?"

Audrey racked her brain. "In the three years she's been with the Lowells, she barely left the house except for occasional shopping. Wait..."

A memory clicked. "That new official, Commissioner Quentin Davis! He came to the house to see her once. He even asked her to say hello to Marcus Evans for him."

Caleb froze. "She's close with Commissioner Davis?"

"I think so."

Caleb fell silent for a long moment. "It seems until we truly figure out who's backing this woman, we can't make any reckless moves."

Audrey couldn't let it go. "Dad, she almost ruined our family! We're just going to let her get away with it?"

Caleb stroked Audrey's hair, playing the role of the devoted father perfectly. "Audrey, eventually, the entire Preston empire will be yours. So from now on, you need to start taking our family's future seriously."

Audrey pouted. "People say you have other kids out there. For all I know, I have a bunch of half-siblings running around."

Caleb laughed, the sound hollow and calculated. "That's just malicious gossip from jealous people with nothing better to do. You're my precious daughter, my absolute favorite in the world. Don't you know that?"

Appeased, Audrey smiled. "Dad, I want to help, but I don't know what to do."

Caleb leaned in and whispered something in her ear.

Audrey's eyes widened. "Dad, will that really work? What if Adrian doesn't want to?"

Caleb sneered. "That depends on how smart you are. I'll make sure to create the perfect opportunity for you."

Jocelyn saw Adrian again. He brought the divorce papers.

It was so fast that Jocelyn almost couldn't believe it.

She read through the agreement carefully. The settlement was fifty million dollars and a car—the Porsche Panamera she currently drove. It had been part of her dowry. Thankfully, Diana hadn't managed to steal it from her.

Without a second of hesitation, Jocelyn signed her name.
