Jocelyn returned to The Crestview Residence.
The massive house felt so empty and cold it was almost eerie.
Only a maid was in the living room, cleaning up.
The maid paused when she saw her.
"Miss Jocelyn, you're back."
"I just came back to grab a few things. Where is everyone?" Jocelyn asked.
"Mrs. Evans is upstairs. Jeremy went out."
Jocelyn sighed.
It seemed Marcus's passing hadn't knocked any sense into Jeremy's head.
Now that the pillar of the Evans family was gone, he was supposed to step up and take responsibility.
But all he still cared about was partying.
Jocelyn walked upstairs.
As she reached the landing, she ran into Diana coming out of her room.
Diana looked even worse than Jocelyn did.
Jocelyn didn't greet her.
Marcus's death had severed the absolute last shred of attachment she had to this house.
For once, Diana wasn't immediately hostile. Her voice was hoarse.
"Why are you back at a time like this?"
Jocelyn replied coldly.
"I came to get a few things. I'll leave as soon as I'm done."
"What things?"
"Nothing valuable. Just some of Dad's personal belongings. I want to keep them as mementos."
Diana scoffed.
"He's dead. What's the point of holding onto a dead man's junk?"
Jocelyn bristled.
"I don't have time to argue with you. I'll get my things and leave. Don't worry, I won't ever step foot in this house again. I'll keep the promise I made you."
"Diana, do you have any conscience at all?!"
"Me? No conscience?" Diana's anger exploded. "If it wasn't for my family's backing, the Evans family wouldn't have any of the luxury they enjoy today! I'm just taking what's rightfully mine!"
"And speaking of conscience!" Diana sneered mockingly. "Let me ask you, oh perfect, dutiful daughter."
"When your father was on his deathbed, he kept calling your name. He fought tooth and nail to hold onto his last breath just waiting to see you one last time. And what did you do? You didn't even pick up the damn phone!"
"You knew your father could take a turn for the worse at any second, and you actually turned your phone off!"
"Where is your conscience, Jocelyn?!"
Her words hit Jocelyn like a physical blow, tearing her apart.
A wave of intense nausea washed over her. She scrambled into the bathroom and threw up into the sink.
Diana followed her in, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
"Are you pregnant?"
It took Jocelyn a long time to catch her breath.
"No. It's my stomach ulcer acting up."
Diana huffed. "I figured you wouldn't be."
