The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 206

The next day, Jocelyn arrived at Summit Law Firm and met with Mr. Chase.

Mr. Chase led her into a conference room and closed the door behind them.

"Miss Evans, the situation is this. Your father drafted a will with our firm and entrusted it to my care."

He opened a thick manila envelope and pulled out a stack of documents.

"This is your father's will."

Her father had left her a will.

What could be in it?

Jocelyn opened the file.

As she read through the pages, the lawyer explained the terms.

"In his will, your father stipulated that upon his passing, 80% of his personal assets, including his vacation resorts, are to be inherited by you. The remaining 20% will go to your brother, Jeremy Evans."

"As for The Crestview Residence, where your mother and brother currently reside, that will be left to them. However, your father purchased an estate in the South Hills under your name. That belongs entirely to you."

Jocelyn slowly closed the folder.

Tears slid silently down her cheeks, soaking her heart in sorrow.

Her father had truly loved her.

He had done all of this for her in secret, without ever breathing a word of it.

"However..." the lawyer said, recalling an incident from a few days ago.

"Oddly enough, your mother came to see me recently, demanding to know about the will. I have no idea how she found out your father had one on file here."

"Thankfully, everyone at the firm stood their ground and denied its existence, which eventually got her to leave."

"But once this will is read into the record, I highly doubt your mother is going to let this go quietly."

"She'll likely fight tooth and nail for the estate, even if it means dragging you to court. You need to be mentally prepared. Even though these assets were solely in your father's name, they technically still fall under marital property. She won't take this lying down."

Jocelyn felt nothing.

She and Diana had long since burned their bridges.

"Additionally, your father left you one more thing."

Mr. Chase opened a second envelope.

This time, he pulled out a USB flash drive.

"This contains a video message your father wanted you to hear. It's about... your birth parents."

Jocelyn gasped, her whole body jolting.

She slammed the spacebar to pause the video, unable to keep going.

She was terrified of what she was about to hear.

Terrified that she really would end up hating the man she had relied on as her only father her entire life.

She didn't know how much time had passed. Eventually, she slowly lifted her head from the desk, took a deep breath, and hit play again.

Marcus's voice grew heavy with guilt.

"Back then, a psychic told us that because we couldn't conceive a son, we needed to adopt a girl with a very specific birth chart. According to him, a girl born on that specific date was fated to bring a younger brother into the family."

"Adopting her would guarantee we'd finally have a boy."

"Diana believed him wholeheartedly. She started desperately searching for a girl with that exact birth chart. But in a world this big, finding a needle in a haystack isn't easy."

"Until... you were born at the hospital."

"It seemed like a coincidence, but it wasn't. It was calculated."

"Your biological mother and Diana met by chance. Over time, your mother started treating Diana like a sister and trusted her with everything."

"Your mother had a very difficult labor with you, which left her incredibly weak. On top of that, your biological father had gone missing. All of this pushed her into severe postpartum depression."
