Julian gave a faint murmur of acknowledgment.
He took a few steps before stopping again. With his back turned, his voice sounded a bit heavy.
"Take a few days off. Stay with her."
Sarah remained rooted to the spot long after his figure disappeared from view.
His level of concern went far beyond ordinary care... it bordered on blatant favoritism.
Liam clicked his tongue and lightly flicked Jocelyn's forehead.
"Taking matters into your own hands like that. You've always been so calm and level-headed. How could you be so reckless this time? What if that Lowell bastard had ulterior motives and tried to force himself on you? Did you really think a pocket knife would stop him?"
Jocelyn was still drowning in regret.
"I'm sorry."
"You don't need to apologize to me," Liam said. "Save it for Julian. What you said to him earlier crossed a line. Don't you think that hurt him?"
"I know."
"And yet you still said it."
"I didn't mean to."
Liam let out a heavy sigh.
"Ever since Julian... reconnected with you, he's cared more about your affairs than his own. Do you have any idea how much he's done behind the scenes to stand up for you?"
He hesitated.
He wasn't sure if he should be the one to lay it all out.
One man loved in total silence, doing everything in the shadows.
And the woman in question remained completely oblivious.
Liam thought for a moment.
"Forget it. You two need to sort out your own issues. He looked terrible just now. He's probably really pissed off."
Stepping outside, Liam found him.
Julian was leaning against his car, smoking.
Liam walked over. "Give me one."
Julian tossed him the entire pack.
Too lazy to grab a lighter, Liam simply leaned in and lit his cigarette off the cherry of Julian's.
After exhaling a thick plume of smoke, he finally spoke.
"Since when did you pick up a smoking habit?"
