Adrian knocked on Jocelyn's door for a long time, but it remained closed.
He assumed she was still upset and decided to give her some space to cool down.
Audrey stood behind him, her eyes flashing with resentment.
That woman was not easy to deal with!
She always managed to come out on top!
But she was more worried about Adrian.
When Jocelyn ran off crying, Audrey had clearly seen Adrian's expression cloud with a flicker of raw, conflicted pain.
That look used to be reserved for her alone. He would never have looked at that woman that way before!
Could it be...
Audrey suddenly felt a wave of unease.
"Adrian, why don't you come to my room and rest for a bit? I'm sure Jocelyn will come around soon."
"Come around to what?" Adrian was suddenly very irritated. "Come around to divorcing me?"
Audrey had never seen Adrian speak to her with such impatience. Her eyes immediately reddened.
"I... I didn't mean it like that..."
Seeing her tears, Adrian felt even more frustrated.
For some reason, seeing Audrey cry didn't stir the same feelings of protectiveness in him anymore.
But seeing Jocelyn cry made his heart ache.
What was wrong with him?
But Adrian still couldn't bring himself to be harsh with Audrey, so he forced himself to calm down.
"I'm sorry. My tone was a bit harsh just now."
Audrey's eyes welled with tears. "Adrian, don't apologize to me. It makes me feel like you're so far away."
Adrian glanced one last time at the closed door.
"Let's go. I'll take you back to your room."
Jocelyn pressed her ear to the door, and only when she could no longer hear any sounds from outside did she run to call Sarah.
"How long did she kneel?"
Maria thought for a moment. "About ten minutes, then she ran off. The matriarch watched her go but didn't say anything."
Jocelyn's face was calm.
She had already guessed it was just for show.
"But Jocelyn," Maria was a little worried. "After what happened today, your life in the Lowell family is probably going to be even harder. I'm worried they'll..."
Ugh.
Jocelyn had just taken a sip of soup when a wave of nausea hit her.
"Maria, did you put black pepper in the soup?"
Maria replied, "Just a little."
"No wonder..."
"Oh!" Maria finally understood. "You can't stand the smell of pepper, can you, Jocelyn? I won't put it in any of the dishes from now on."
