Gideon was in disbelief.
"You trust me just like that? You're not worried?"
"Worried about what?" Jocelyn countered. "That you'll trash the place? You're a human, not a stray husky."
The corner of Gideon's mouth twitched into a faint smile.
Jocelyn pulled all the cash out of her wallet and handed it to him.
"Take this for food. Once the expo is over, I'll contact you."
Gideon gripped the cash tightly.
In his entire life, aside from the girl he grew up with, no one had ever treated him with this kind of unconditional kindness.
"Thank you."
By the time Jocelyn left The Astoria and got to her own place, it was incredibly late.
The moment Maria heard the door open, she hurried over.
Taking Jocelyn's bag, she gently scolded her.
"Miss Jocelyn, why are you just now getting in? Do you know what time it is?"
Jocelyn's heart warmed.
The house smelled like a home-cooked meal, the lights were on, and someone was waiting for her. Wasn't this exactly the kind of life she had always wanted?
"Maria, I picked up a man today," Jocelyn announced casually.
"You picked up a man?!"
"Mhm."
Jocelyn gave her a quick rundown of what happened with Gideon.
Maria was horrified.
"Miss Jocelyn, how could you just let a complete stranger move into your place? What if he's a criminal?"
Jocelyn smiled. "A man willing to throw his life away in prison just to try and save the woman he loved... how bad could he really be?"
"I suppose you're right," Maria conceded. "Men with that kind of loyalty and devotion are basically extinct these days."
Realizing how that sounded, she quickly corrected herself.
"Well, not totally extinct. Mr. Vance is definitely one of the good ones."
Jocelyn chuckled.
It seemed Julian ranked incredibly high in Maria's book.
Her phone buzzed with a call from Sarah.
