He claimed he didn't want to ruin their friendship.
But really, he was just terrified of Jocelyn getting her feelings hurt.
Sarah, what are you doing? she asked herself silently.
After wallowing for half an hour, Sarah grabbed her phone and opened her chat with Jocelyn.
Miles away, Julian received a text from Jocelyn.
[Is your stomach acting up again?]
Julian: [I'm fine. Probably just some yogurt I had at the cafeteria for lunch. It passed.]
Jocelyn: [Didn't I tell you to avoid dairy? How could you forget again?]
Julian's fingers hovered over his keyboard, freezing in place.
He stared at the screen for a long time.
A soft, affectionate smile crept onto his lips as his mind drifted.
Ethan leaned over.
"Whatcha doing, Boss?"
He caught a glimpse of the phone screen, spotting the chat window with Jocelyn.
"Texting the goddess? What did she say to leave you looking so lovesick?"
Julian snapped out of it and laughed.
"Ethan."
"Yeah?"
"Am I too nice to you?"
Ethan blinked his large, innocent eyes.
"Why would you say that? Of course you are! You treat me like a brother."
Julian was speechless.
Forget it.
He couldn't even bring himself to scold the guy.
Jocelyn sent another message.
[I picked up a man today.]
Julian stopped typing immediately and simply hit the call button.
"What do you mean you 'picked up a man'?"
Jocelyn was lying on her side in bed, the phone resting near her on speaker.
"Just got incredibly lucky. I originally went down to the precinct to deal with Jeremy's mess, but I ended up stumbling into a goldmine."
"What kind of man?" Julian asked, his voice noticeably deeper.
"A top-tier general who can work for you, and for me."
