Claire checked her phone again, looking utterly defeated.

She had sent Julian multiple texts, and he hadn't replied to a single one.

"Audrey, did you talk to my brother about my situation yet?"

Audrey was distracted. "About what?"

"What do you mean, about what? Did you forget?!"

Audrey tore her eyes away from the hallway, finally remembering.

"I talked to Adrian. I tried to advocate for you."

"And? What did he say? Did he agree to let me stay?!"

Audrey sighed helplessly.

"Claire, honestly, I think your brother has a point. That hit-and-run... the situation isn't one hundred percent secure yet. It's really best if you go abroad and lay low for a while."

"Once the dust settles and people forget, you can always come back."

Claire's face fell in utter disappointment.

"So after all that, you're taking his side?"

Audrey tried to soothe her.

"I'm not taking sides. I just genuinely believe he's looking out for you. He's terrified that if someone uncovers the truth, your entire future will be ruined."

"Who's going to uncover it?!" Claire snapped. "There were no security cameras! No witnesses! No physical evidence! What is there to find? Only a ghost could figure it out!"

"It's just to be safe. Nobody wants to see you go to prison."

"Give me a break," Claire scoffed. "You're not doing this for my own good. You just couldn't convince my brother, so you're making excuses for your own failure."

Audrey flinched, a sharp sting of humiliation hitting her chest.

This girl looked like a spoiled idiot, but she could be devastatingly perceptive when she wanted to be.

"Let me give you a piece of advice, Audrey."

Claire was incredibly disappointed in Audrey.
