He never expected to see his wife in another man's arms.
The moment he saw Jocelyn being held by someone else, a nameless fire had ignited inside him, burning hotter and hotter.
"Adrian."
Just as Adrian parked and walked to the front door, Audrey came out to greet him.
Still fuming, Adrian's words came out sharp.
"Don't you know you're supposed to be resting? What are you doing out here?"
Audrey looked hurt. "I saw your car parked outside for a long time and thought something might be wrong, so I came to check."
Adrian was too agitated to speak.
"I think I saw Jocelyn just now. Why didn't she come in? Where could she be going this late?"
Still furious, Adrian spoke without thinking.
"Where else? To meet her lover!"
Audrey paused. "You mean Jocelyn..."
Realizing what he'd said, Adrian quickly backtracked. "I was just kidding. She had a family thing to take care of."
Audrey's hand suddenly touched his cheek. "Adrian, what happened to your face? It looks like you were slapped. Did... did Jocelyn hit you?"
Adrian pulled her hand away, annoyed. "Why would she hit me? You're overthinking things."
Then, a thought occurred to him. "Don't get any funny ideas. I don't want Grandma and Mom get it wrong and giving her a hard time again."
At his words, a shadow passed over Audrey's eyes.
She had seen what happened in the car.
If Eleanor and Michelle found out that woman had hit Adrian, her life in the Evans family would become even more miserable.
But to her surprise, Adrian was covering for Jocelyn.
Could it be...
"Don't worry, Adrian, I won't get the wrong idea," Audrey said. "I know how much you care about Jocelyn."
Adrian paused for a few seconds. "I care about her?"
Audrey studied his expression. "Don't you?"
The fight with Adrian hadn't affected her mood at all.
She had been one step ahead the whole time.
She really had to thank Audrey for her habit of spying.
How else would she have witnessed such a wonderful scene?
Audrey must have been heartbroken to see Adrian get hit.
And that heartbreak was exactly what was needed to capture the perfect photos.
Jocelyn took a hot shower and settled comfortably into bed.
A text from Sarah came in.
[Perfect angle, crystal clear photos. Get a good night's sleep. Get ready for a surprise tomorrow.]
A meaningful smile curved Jocelyn's lips.
[If all goes well, tomorrow will bring a double victory.]
