The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 420

Julian: "Friends."

Diana: "It sounds to me like you two are more than just casual friends."

Julian: "Good friends."

Diana was still skeptical.

"Just friends?"

Julian: "Mrs. Evans, I don't believe I owe you an explanation."

Diana let out a polite, forced laugh.

"I'm just looking out for Jocelyn. Now that she's divorced from that Lowell boy, she's going to need to find a reliable man to settle down with. I obviously don't want her rushing into another marriage. If she's going to marry, she needs to marry well."

Jocelyn muttered under her breath next to the phone.

"Always trying to profit off me."

When she had married Adrian, Diana had wrung out plenty of benefits—the massive dowry and endless gold and silver jewelry had all gone straight into her pockets.

What was this? Was she scheming to sell her off for a profit a second time?

"Diana Evans, drop the ulterior motives. Let alone the fact that I never want to get married again, even if I did, it would have absolutely nothing to do with you."

Julian's gaze halted for a fraction of a second at her words.

Diana's voice snapped his attention back.

"Listen to you, what kind of nonsense is that? No matter what happens, I am still your mother! Blood is thicker than water. If you get married again, you'll still have to leave from your family's house, won't you?"

Jocelyn let out a cold laugh.

"I don't have a family."

Diana sounded noticeably irritated.

"I was actually in a good mood today, but you just have to pick a fight, don't you?! Even if you walked out on the Evans family, you should still be grateful to me for raising you!"

*Raising me?*

Those words sent a sudden, piercing spike of agony straight through Jocelyn's heart.

"Have you forgotten the time I didn't listen to you, so you locked me in a pitch-black room and starved me for an entire day? You didn't even give me a drop of water!"
