"Oh? Let's hear it."
"If Adrian goes to clarify this alone, it won't be convincing," Jocelyn said. "Only if I, his wife, personally step forward to clear the names of my husband and sister-in-law will it be truly persuasive."
Having navigated the business world for years, Eleanor immediately understood Jocelyn's meaning.
Everything had a price tag. Since she had brought up the apartment and offered to help, she was clearly expecting something in return.
Although Eleanor disliked it, she knew that Jocelyn's method was indeed the only good one.
Eleanor cleared her throat. "Adrian!"
Adrian responded with a lifeless "hmm."
"Since you promised to give that apartment to Jo, why did you go back on your word? Is our family short on money? Even if you wanted to give your nephew a one-month gift, you could just buy another one. A man should keep his word."
"Jo." Eleanor sounded like a benevolent and generous elder. "Grandma will handle this for you. After the press conference, I'll have Adrian go with you to take care of the paperwork."
Jocelyn said, "Grandma, maybe we shouldn't. It will look like I'm taking advantage of the situation."
"Nonsense. This is what Adrian already promised you. It's settled."
"Alright then. Grandma, don't worry. I'll accompany Adrian to the press conference tomorrow. I'm sure this will all blow over quickly."
Eleanor nodded, satisfied.
Michelle helped her up.
"This morning has been so exhausting. I'm going back for a nap."
Once they were back in the room with the door closed, Michelle couldn't hold back her resentment. "Mom! That apartment might not be huge, but it's in a prime location. Are we just going to give it to that woman for free?"
Eleanor's kindly facade vanished in an instant, her tone turning cold.
"You think I want to? If we don't, she won't go to the press conference with Adrian!"
Jocelyn looked at the sleeping infant in her arms and couldn't help but place a hand on her own stomach.
In a couple of days, she would have to say goodbye to the baby inside her.
This time, Jocelyn couldn't be bothered to play along with Audrey's pitiful act. She just spoke to Adrian.
"Adrian, let's just forget about the apartment. Since Audrey wants it, just give it to her. I'll be fine."
Already exhausted by the whole ordeal, Adrian rubbed his temples. "I promised it to you. It was my mistake for going back on my word. After this is over, we'll go handle the transfer."
With that, he turned and left without even glancing at the baby.
Audrey bit her lip resentfully.
For once, Jocelyn studied the child's face intently. Not a single feature mirrored Adrian.
A faint, mocking smile played on her lips. "Your genes are certainly strong, Audrey. A shame the boy doesn't resemble my husband's side in the slightest."
