The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 48

That's why she had come up with this excuse.

She could stay somewhere else for a few days, and the whole thing would be taken care of without anyone knowing.

Adrian got up to leave.

"Get some rest. Don't forget about the press conference tomorrow morning."

Jocelyn closed the door and dialed Sarah's number.

"Are you crazy? Since when is that playboy Liam Bancroft your boyfriend?"

Sarah giggled. "It's the only way to completely clear Adrian's suspicions about you. At a time like this, we can't let him get ahold of any leverage against you, or it will mess up your plans."

A wave of warmth washed over Jocelyn.

Right now, only Sarah was so wholeheartedly on her side.

"Sarah, I really... thank you."

"Well, you can treat me to a feast at Aurelia."

Aurelia, Northwood City's top five-star restaurant.

"No problem," Jocelyn said without hesitation. "But we'll have to wait until after my procedure."

Sarah was quiet for a few seconds. "Is there no room for reconsideration?"

"None."

"Okay. I'll go with you when the time comes."

"Thanks."

Sarah thought of something and laughed even harder.

"But do you even have the money to treat me to Aurelia right now?"

Only then did Jocelyn remember.

The money she had in her pocket had been completely emptied for the Evans family.

She was now completely broke.

"How about I treat, you pay? I can owe you and pay you back later?"

"That works."

The next morning, Jocelyn accompanied Adrian to the press conference.

Faced with the reporters' tough questions, Jocelyn handled them with poise and ease.

Her words were pointed, a mix of jest and mockery.

A faint smile played on Adrian's lips. "I've certainly underestimated you."

Jocelyn remained composed, affecting a slightly hurt tone.

"All I know is that you should keep your promises. You're the one who promised me and then took it back. Are you going to blame me now?"

Looking into her crystal-clear eyes, which seemed to speak volumes, Adrian's heart inexplicably softened.

"It's cold out. Go home early. I'm heading to my meeting."

Jocelyn watched Adrian leave.

That back... soon enough, she would never have to see it again.

Jocelyn's phone rang.

It was the hospital.

"Ms. Lowell, could you please come to the hospital right now?"

Jocelyn was confused. "Is something wrong?"

"It's regarding the sperm sample used for your IVF treatment..."
