The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 69

Audrey gritted her teeth in fury.

Jocelyn said calmly, "You've actually been going about this all wrong. You shouldn't be wasting your little tricks on me. You should be using every ounce of your charm to weld Adrian's heart to yours. Make it so he can't imagine marrying anyone but you. That would be the smart move."

Jocelyn leaned in, whispering in Audrey's ear.

"What Adrian likes about you is your sweetness and innocence, isn't it? If he realized his precious angel was actually a cold, calculating snake, wouldn't all your plans go up in smoke?"

Audrey's hands clenched into fists. She was seething with hatred but couldn't lash out. She felt like she was a step below Jocelyn.

How could this be?

She was the treasured daughter of the Preston Corporation. And Jocelyn was just a stray the Evans family had taken in. So why did this woman command such a powerful presence?

Adrian walked in and saw the two of them looking close, a smile gracing his lips.

"Made up?"

Jocelyn didn't understand. Made up about what?

Audrey, however, was quick to respond.

"Adrian, I've already apologized to Jocelyn, and she's forgiven me. So you can't scold me anymore."

Adrian replied smoothly, "When have I ever scolded you?"

The stormy expression on Audrey's face instantly cleared. She walked over to Adrian and naturally took his arm.

"Adrian, my parents are coming over today, so you have to be a good host. I've always told them that you treat me better than my own brother does."

Adrian's smile was bright. "Of course. I actually need to talk to your parents about that plot of land in the South Hills."

Audrey asked, "You still haven't secured that land? I thought Dad said the deal was almost done."

At the mention of this, Adrian's smile faded slightly.

"It was almost done. But last night, your father called me and said the other party had backed out."

Audrey exclaimed, "What? How could that happen? What do they want?"

Adrian sighed. "It would be easier if we knew what they were thinking. The most frustrating part is not knowing anything at all."

All eyes turned to Jocelyn.

Jocelyn paid no attention to their words. She only asked, "Where's Maria?"

An unnatural expression crossed Adrian's face.

"Maria said she's getting old and doesn't want to work anymore. She resigned and went back to her hometown."

Bullshit! There was no way Jocelyn would believe that.

"You fired Maria, didn't you?"

Laura's gaze swept over Jocelyn, openly appraising her, with none of the deference of a servant.

"Is there something wrong with my work?"

Jocelyn snapped, "You shut your mouth!"

Laura was taken aback. "Jocelyn, I may be a servant, but I am a distant relative of the old lady. Shouldn't I be shown some basic respect?"
