Jocelyn had no choice but to admit defeat.
She had food in her room; she never would have asked Maria to bring her anything. But Maria had done it out of kindness.
Jocelyn was drowning in guilt.
She glanced at the 'tattletale,' feeling a disgust for someone she had never felt before.
Audrey's expression shifted quickly. "Jocelyn, I didn't mean to do it. I was worried you were hungry and was going to bring you something myself, but then I saw Maria give you food. Just then, Grandma called, and without thinking, I just mentioned it. Jocelyn, I'm so sorry..."
Jocelyn couldn't take it anymore. "Just shut up!"
It was so obvious, yet she still insisted on playing the innocent, pure victim.
Audrey scurried behind Adrian like a frightened bird.
Adrian said, slightly displeased, "Audrey is simple-minded. She wasn't thinking and just said what she saw. What's so wrong with that?"
Eleanor frowned and scolded, "Jocelyn! You need to understand, this is not your house! It's not your place to act so wild!"
Jocelyn felt a chill spread through her.
What a perfect way to say, "This is not your home."
Michelle's face was full of scorn. "Did you think the Evans family was still what it used to be? You picked the wrong place to throw your weight around in our home!"
Jocelyn let out a cold laugh, but her heart ached. Even if the Evans family wasn't as glorious as it once was, a fallen giant is still a giant. If her family cared about her, if they were willing to back her up, perhaps her life with the Lowells wouldn't be so full of compromise and humiliation.
Jocelyn laughed coldly. "Now I understand what they mean when they say some people look down on others."
"Jocelyn!" Adrian strode over and grabbed her. "That's enough!"
Again? A goading tactic?
Jocelyn knew exactly what was happening. Even with the words "I want a divorce" on the tip of her tongue, she held back. She couldn't fall into their trap at this moment.
But the anger simmering in her chest had to be released.
So, with a half-smile and eyes full of disdain, she said, "Grandma, you seem to be saying the same thing a lot lately. Is it that I don't want to be with Adrian anymore, or is it that you don't want me to be with him?"
Eleanor froze and shot Adrian a reproachful look. She had indeed talked to him yesterday, trying to gauge his feelings. To her surprise, Adrian had opposed the divorce. It had foiled her plans.
"In this family, my husband is my anchor. So, I will only listen to him."
Jocelyn deliberately shifted the focus to Adrian.
"If my husband is determined to get a divorce, I won't say another word. But if my husband doesn't want one, I am willing to stay by his side forever."
