It was just like the medical report from yesterday. Even though Adrian had seen with his own eyes that Audrey had lied, what did it matter? From Audrey's smug attitude today, it was clear Adrian hadn't even brought himself to scold her.
Sarah had an idea. "You've always suspected that child isn't Adrian's, right? Why don't we secretly get a paternity test done for them?"
"If the results come back and that child really isn't his, it'll be a fantastic show. The entire Lowell family will become the laughingstock of Northwood City."
Jocelyn had actually considered it. She had secretly consulted a doctor about it.
The doctor said they generally don't recommend using hair for a paternity test on children under six, because their hair follicles aren't fully developed, and it might be impossible to extract enough DNA. The best method was to provide a blood sample from the child. But Jocelyn was about to become a mother herself, and she couldn't bring herself to draw blood from a child.
Adrian came in and saw Jocelyn's bloodshot, tear-stained eyes, and a sharp prick of guilt shot through him.
"It's probably for the best that you go stay at your parents' for a couple of days. It'll avoid any more conflict and give Grandma a chance to cool off. Once she's calmed down, you can come back."
Adrian handed her a bank card.
"Didn't you say you wanted to take a trip? If things are unpleasant at your family's house, then just go and clear your head. Take this card. You can use the money on it however you want."
"But don't be gone too long. Don't forget the charity auction in a few days. You're supposed to attend with me."
Jocelyn took the card without hesitation. It was Adrian's money; she might as well spend it.
As soon as she took the card, Adrian spoke again. "You should go now. They'll be here soon."
Jocelyn smiled bitterly to herself. As the rightful Mrs. Lowell, was she so unsightly that she couldn't be seen?
But Jocelyn no longer cared.
"Alright."
Jocelyn stood up, grabbed her bag, and walked out.
At the door, Adrian's hesitant voice came from behind her.
After so many years, her brother had gotten even more handsome. Unfortunately, he still had that same carefree, irresponsible air about him.
"Mom," Jocelyn said.
Diana was very surprised. "Why are you back so suddenly?"
Jocelyn replied, "I was just passing by and thought I'd stop in."
Diana kept a tight hold on Jeremy's hand. "Look at your brother. Hasn't he gotten more handsome?"
Jocelyn replied perfunctorily, "Yes, much more handsome."
Jeremy raised an eyebrow. "Jocelyn, we haven't seen each other in years. Aren't you even a little excited to see me?"
Jocelyn said coolly, "I'm an adult now. I've learned not to wear my emotions on my sleeve."
