The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 75

Diana's tone softened immediately. "Your brother was just joking with you. Why are you being so serious? I'll talk to him later."

"Don't bother."

Jocelyn looked at Jeremy with cold eyes. "Don't ever lay a hand on me again, or I'll break yours."

Jeremy, however, didn't seem to take her words to heart. He wasn't even angry, just wore a roguish smile.

"Jocelyn, it's been a few years. You're really coming into your own—exactly the kind of woman I've always admired."

His words carried a suggestive undertone, but Diana simply chalked it up to brotherly pride. She assumed he was just fond of his adopted sister and didn't give it a second thought.Jocelyn, however, knew exactly what he meant. After giving Jeremy a warning look, she went to her room. Luckily, the housekeeper cleaned it daily, so the room was spotless.

Jocelyn opened her closet, took out a small suitcase, and packed some clothes. After being mistreated at the Lowell's, she had no intention of complaining to her adoptive family, let alone staying here. Fortunately, she now had The Astoria. At last, she had a place of her own.

As Jocelyn was leaving with her suitcase, Diana saw her. She looked puzzled. "What are you doing with a suitcase?"

Jocelyn didn't want to elaborate. "I'm going away for a couple of days."

Diana asked, "If you're going away, why didn't you pack at your own house? Why come here for your things?"

Her own house?

A pang of pain shot through Jocelyn's heart. Other than The Astoria, which she had fought so hard to get from Adrian, where else did she have a home of her own?

Jocelyn had already prepared her excuse.

"I was just passing by. What difference does it make where I pack?"

Diana sensed something was off. "Are you leaving tonight?"

Jocelyn confirmed, "Yes."

Diana asked, "Aren't you going to say goodbye to them?"

Jocelyn replied, "I already did."

"The fact that Adrian hasn't mentioned divorce and was willing to lend us money means he still has feelings for you."

"So you must have a child with him quickly. Hold onto him tightly, and don't let go of that lifeline."

"Do you understand?"

Jocelyn pressed her lips together, saying nothing.

Diana sighed. "The Evans family can't give you anything anymore. From now on, you'll have to rely on the Lowell family. You need to be smart about things."

"And you need to change your ways. Stop just thinking about having fun. You need to please your husband, his mother, and his grandmother."

Jocelyn sighed faintly. "Are you done?"

Diana noticed her impatience. "Don't be so dismissive. Everything I'm saying is for your own good."

Jocelyn asked, "Or are you just reminding me that everything the Evans family has is none of my business, and I shouldn't even think about it?"
