Chapter 76-2
Of course she is. She’s fucking waiting for him.
“Take her and leave.”
“Zara -”
Clair
“Maybe go for a nice dinner with her,” I spit out. “Carry on your flirting, like you were doing in the kitchen.”
His whole body stills. For one second, neither of us speaks. Then he exhales.
“Is that what this is all about?”
The question slices straight through me. “What?”
“I didn’t realize that was what you thought you saw.”
“What I thought?”
His jaw tightens. “That came out wrong.”
“It came out exactly right, I think. The way that you really mean it.”
He runs a hand over his face. “Willow turned up because Jade told her you were having treatment. She brought some herbal tea and something she’d baked. I told her you were asleep.”
“And then you opened the wine?”
“She opened it. She brought it, actually.”
“How romantic.”
“Zara.”
“Was touching you part of checking on me too?”
His eyes close briefly. “She was going to read my palm.”
I stare at him, then I laugh. It hurts my ribs, so I stop pretty quick.
“My God.”
“It wasn’t like that,” he insists. “She asked if she could look at my hand, said something about self-control.
I wasn’t flirting with her.”
“She was clearly flirting with you.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“You expect me to believe you didn’t notice?”
“I wasn’t paying attention to her like that. I was listening for you.”
“While laughing with her.”
Chapter 762.
Claim
“was trying to be polite. She’s your sister, the one that the family only just found. I can’t be a d**k to the
woman.
“Leave.”
He steps closer. “Zara, you’ve got this completely wrong.”
“Don’t.” The room goes very still. “Don’t you dare.”
“I’m telling you -‘
“No.” My voice is quiet now, and steady. More dangerous than shouting. “You don’t get to tell me that I didn’t see what I saw.”
“I’m not saying you imagined it.”
“Oh, right,” I say sarcastically. “You’re just saying that I understood it wrong.”
“Because you did.”
For a second, I can’t breathe.
Maybe another woman would’ve heard reassurance, or logic, or even a simple disagreement. I don’t, though.
I hear correction. I hear certainty. I hear someone telling me that what my own eyes witnessed somehow isn’t as reliable as his explanation.
And I know that this is how it starts. Not with the huge lies, the huge lies come later.
First, someone tells you that you misunderstood. Then they tell you you’re tired. You’re emotional, or you’re jealous, or you’re reading too much into things.
Eventually… you stop asking questions, because they’ve taught you that every answer already belongs to
them.
Because you did.
The words hang between us. My chest tightens.
For years, Knox gave me reasons and explanations, things that were better versions of every ugly thing I witnessed. He taught me that memory could be bent if someone spoke with enough confidence. That fear was irrational, that instinct was jealousy, that the truth was whatever he said it was.
“I lived with lies for years,” I whisper. “Every time I questioned something, Knox made me doubt myself.”
“I’m not Knox.”
“I know.” I shake my head. “You’re not. But I’m not that woman anymore either. I trust myself. I know what I saw, and you’re not going to stand there and explain it until I doubt myself. Nobody is.”
He looks at me for a long moment. “You’ve got it all wrong.” He walks to the door, and his hand rests on the handle. “But I’ll go. I just don’t want you alone.”
“I won’t be ”
Chapter 76-2
Another nod, one that’s barely there. Then he opens the door.
Clam
“Oh, and take her with you,” I snap, unable to say the name Willow. “She’s not welcome in this room. It’s for family only.”
“I will.” He doesn’t turn around. “I hope you feel better soon, baby.”
The door closes behind him. And I stare at it, repeating the only things I know for certain:
I saw them.
I trust myself.
I know what I saw.
I trust myself.
I’m not crazy.
I trust myself.
