The MC President's Forsaken Wife (Zara and Knox) novel Chapter 130

Chapter 77-1

The journey from the hospital to Jade and Mayhem’s house is almost completely silent. The kind of quiet that follows a storm, when everyone is too damn exhausted to pretend everything is fine.

I watch familiar streets slide past the window. The turning that leads towards my little shoebox apartment, which right now I’m missing like crazy. Another set of lights that would eventually lead to Locke’s penthouse.

Home.

Except neither of them feel like home anymore.

I close my eyes as my stomach lurches a bit; the effects of the chemo have really levelled off in the past day, but I get a bit of a reminder every now and again.

“I’m sorry,” Jade says quietly.

I look across at her. “For what?”

“That none of your options feel safe.”

The words settle somewhere deep inside me, because she’s absolutely right. I can’t go to my place, since Knox knows where I live. Dad has made it abundantly clear that if I try to go back there, he’ll station armed bikers outside the building whether I like it or not.

And Locke…

The thought hurts too much to finish.

Jade doesn’t push. She simply reaches across the centre console at the next set of lights and squeezes my hand once before putting both hands back on the wheel.

“We’re nearly there.”

“I know,” I say. “And if I forget to tell you again… thank you, Jade.”

“Bah,” she says, indicating onto their street. “No need to thank me. I need more female company in my life, what with working in a goddamn biker bar.”

As we pull into the driveway, I see that Mayhem’s motorcycle is parked outside.

“So he’s home,” I murmur. “I thought he’d be at the garage.”

“He took the afternoon off.”

“For me?”

“For you.”

By the time we reach the front door, Jade carrying my overnight bag, Mayhem is already standing there. He doesn’t say anything, he just wraps me in a careful hug.

“You scared the hell out of me,” he mutters into my hair. “I thought you were in a coma or something, when

heard that nobody could wake you up.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper against his chest. “I really didn’t mean to.”

He steps back quickly clearing his throat. “I bought supplies.”

Jade glances towards the kitchen before looking back at him. “You didn’t have to do all of that.”

“I wanted to.”

“Right.”

There’s a tiny pause now, not awkward exactly. Just… unfinished. Mayhem keeps looking at Jade, almost as though he’s waiting for her to say something else. She doesn’t. Instead she shifts my overnight bag, adjusting the strap on her shoulder.

He drops his hand, and that’s when I realize that Mayhem was about to offer to carry it for his wife. Neither of them comments on it, but suddenly the house feels a lot more tense than it should.

Jade sighs as we enter the kitchen, and I stop dead and blink. Every counter is covered. There’s electrolyte drinks, crackers, soup, fruit, three different kinds of herbal tea. Also, enough yoghurt to feed a small village.

“Mayhem,” I say. “Why are there ninety-four containers of yoghurt?”

“They were on offer. Buy two, get two free.”

“They’re all the same flavor,” I observe. “They’re all vanilla.”

“Isn’t that your favorite?” he falters. “I thought it was.”

“It is,” I assure him. “And seeing as there are roughly two dozen containers, it’s a damn good thing that it is.

“So I did OK?”

I nod, but Jade gives him a flat look. “You accidentally did something helpful. Yay for you.”

I look back and forth between them, feeling more and more out of place. Despite how they look and come across, Jade and Mayhem never talk to each other like this – they have hands-down the most loving and respectful relationship that I’ve ever seen. Passionate and teasing, sure… but not pointed and barbed.

“Come on.” Jade catches my eye. “I’ll take you upstairs, get you set up in the guest room.””
