Chapter 77-2
Mayhem looks up from the open fridge. “I’ll come
He meets Jade’s eyes, and stops himself halfway through the sentence
“No,” Jade says shortly. “I’ve got her.”
Another silence stretches between them.
“Okay.” Mayhem smiles at men, but it’s definitely strained. “If you need anything. Zarabug, just shout.”
“I will.”
The guest room door is already open and I stop in the doorway, taking in what is the most comforting sight ever:
Fresh sheets. Extra blankets folded neatly across the end of the bed. A charger already plugged into the wall. The curtains half closed to soften the afternoon light. On the bedside table sits a wicker basket with a notebook, lip balm, hand cream, tissues, a thermometer, anti-nausea tablets, fluffy socks, and peppermint sweets.
Jade watches my face carefully. “I wasn’t sure what you’d need.”
“You thought of everything.”
“I tried.”
I walk slowly into the room, my fingertips brushing the beautifully folded blanket. “You did all this today?”
She shrugs. “I had a list.”
“You made a list?”
“Babe, I make lists for everything.” She walks over to the bedside table, picking up the notebook. “I’ve written your medication times in here.” She taps the page. “Breakfast is whenever you wake up. Lunch is non-negotiable. If you’re tired, you sleep. If you’re cold, there are more blankets in the cupboard.”
I shake my head. “You’ve planned my entire existence.”
“No. I’ve just removed all the decisions.” She smiles gently. “Sit down, Zara. Relax, okay?”
I do. The mattress dips beneath my weight, and it’s tempting to just keep leaning back until I’m totally horizontal.
“I’ll put the kettle on.” Jade fusses with the curtains, making sure that the sun isn’t directly in my eyes. “And when you’re ready, I think we should talk about Willow.”
A knock sounds softly against the half-open bedroom door, and we both look over. Mayhem is there, but he doesn’t step inside. He leans one shoulder against the frame instead, his attention fixed entirely on me.
“I’m heading over to the garage for a bit,” he says. “I have to get the payroll ready for next week.”
“You didn’t have to be here on my account,” I tell him. “You could have worked and seen me tonight.”
Chapter 722
A smile touches his mouth, but it never quite reaches his eyes. “I know, but I wanted to see you.” He glances briefly towards Jade.
Claim
For a heartbeat neither of them speaks, they don’t even look at each other, then Mayhem turns and goes back downstairs, and hear the front door close. Jade waits until the motorcycle starts outside, the engine rumbling before fading down the street. Only then does she let out a slow breath I don’t think she realized she’d been holding.
“What did you two fight about?” I ask without preamble.
She starts a bit. “What makes you think that we did?”
“Come on.” I pat the bed. “Talk to me.”
She sits beside me, and for a few moments, neither of us says anything. Rain taps lightly agairist the window, and I wait.
Finally I ask, “How bad was it?”
“Bad.” Jade looks at her hands. “The worst fight we’ve ever had.”
Guilt settles heavily beneath my ribs. “I’m sorry.”
“No.” Her head snaps up. “No. Absolutely not. You do not apologize because my husband and I disagreed.”
“You didn’t disagree about whose turn it was to empty the dishwasher,” I say hollowly. “You fought about me, didn’t you?”
“We fought because Mayhem thinks that being loyal to Locke means giving him the benefit of the doubt. He said Locke wouldn’t humiliate you. Wouldn’t flirt with Willow. Wouldn’t risk losing you over something that stupid.”
“And what did you say?”
“That I think Willow knew exactly what she was doing when she touched him.”
The certainty in her voice makes something inside me loosen and tighten at the same time.
