The MC President's Forsaken Wife (Zara and Knox) novel Chapter 311

Chapter 152-2

He grows quiet then, his eyes lingering on my face for a long, unbroken stretch of time. The silence between us isn’t uncomfortable; it’s thick with years of shared survival, unspoken relief, and a deep, unshakeable love. He doesn’t look away, taking me in with an intensity that makes my breath catch slightly in my throat.

“What?” I ask, tilting my head. “Have I got food on my face?”

Dad smiles, a soft, immensely tender expression that completely transforms his hard, weathered face. The harsh lines etched around his eyes soften, and the fierce MC President simply fades away, leaving only my father.

“No,” he says, his voice dropping into a gentle murmur. “You just… you remind me so much of your mother right now, sweetheart. It’s almost uncanny.”

My heart aches with a sweet, sudden nostalgia. My memories of my mother are fleeting and fragmentary: soft sounds, the smell of lavender soap, and lullabies. Hearing Dad speak about her always feels like holding a delicate piece of glass.

‘Really?” I say.

‘Really,” Dad nods, his eyes softening with decades of love and memory. “It’s not just your cheekbones, or the way you hold your chin when you’re thinking. It’s your nature. You’ve got her sweet, forgiving, loving spirit.”

swallow against the tightness in my throat, reaching up to brush a stray strand of hair behind my ear.

‘You’ve been through absolute hell – this disease, Knox, the threat hanging over our heads – and instead of letting it make you bitter or cold, you’re sitting here building bridges between me and Willow. You love deeply, and you forgive people who don’t always know how to ask for it. That was all her. All your Mom.”

‘I try, Dad.”

‘You don’t have to try. It’s just who you are. Your mother had that same quiet strength. She could look at a broken man or a broken situation and see the path through it without ever raising her voice.”

He pauses, then speaks again, with more hesitation:

“When you were sick, when you were lying in that hospital bed looking like a whisper of yourself, I was terri fied that spirit was going to get extinguished. I thought I was going to lose the last piece of her I had left.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Dad.”

“I know that now. And look at you tonight, sweetheart. Just look at you.”

“What about me?”

“You’re glowing,” he says. “You look so healthy. You’ve gained a bit of weight back… your cheeks look full, your skin has got that bright, vibrant light to it again. The color in your face isn’t just from the stove heat, Zara. You look whole. You look wonderful.”

I take a slow, deep breath, letting his words sink into the quiet places of my heart where doubt used to

live, I look around the warm, firelit penthouse, at the clean kitchen, at the city lights twinkling outside like a galaxy of gold, and finally back at my father’s weathered, loving face.

He’s right. I am happy.

For the first time in years, the shadows of my past aren’t defining my present. I survived the poison in my veins, I found a home, I have a man who loves me with an iron devotion, and I have a father who would tear the world apart to keep me safe.

The fear that used to tighten my throat every morning has loosened its grip.

“I am happy, Dad,” I say. “I really, truly am.”

“Good,” Dad says, standing up from the table. “Because after everything you’ve carried, you deserve every single second of it.”

He steps beside my chair, and I stand up to meet him. He wraps his arms around me in a massive, enveloping hug, pulling me flush against his chest. I rest my head against his shoulder, listening to the slow, steady thud of his heart, the same heavy, reliable rhythm that has anchored my entire life through every storm.

“Thank you for dinner, sweetheart,” he murmurs into my hair, holding me tight for a long moment before letting go. “It was the best meal I’ve had in ten years.”

“You’re welcome anytime, Dad,” I say, pulling back to look at him. “Just give me a few days’ notice so I can cook enough for you.”

“Deal,” he chuckles. “And I won’t eat for days beforehand.”

I walk him to the private elevator. He steps inside, the doors framing his broad shoulders as he looks back at me one last time, the warm light of the hallway reflecting in his eyes.

“Eight days until those test results, Zara,” Dad reminds me, his eyes gleaming with quiet, fierce confidence. “If Locke isn’t back, I’m taking you. We’re in this together.”

“Eight days,” I echo. “It’ll fly by.”

The elevator doors glide shut, leaving me standing in the quiet warmth.

I walk back into the living room. The lights stretch out below like a carpet of fallen stars. I wrap my arms around myself, feeling the lingering heat of the fireplace against my back, completely calm.

My father is at peace with my brother, Mayhem and Jade have found each other again, the door to Willow is open, and my body is strong, whole, and hopefully healing.

I take a long, slow breath, looking out into the night, ready for whatever eight days will bring. I feel ready for anything.

Surely life can’t throw me even one single surprise.
