Chapter 153-1
Clar
The morning light comes through the windows in long, cold sheets, cutting through the ocean mist. Out beyond the glass, the water is a heavy slate-gray, rolling in slow, rhythmic swells against the dark jagged line of the shoreline. Above it all, the mountains sit locked under a thick crown of cloud.
I’m standing at the kitchen island, wrapped in an oversized knit sweater with a steaming mug of black coffee held tight between both hands. The penthouse is quiet in that hollow, echoing way it’s had ever since Locke has been gone. It’s a silence so dense, you can hear the wind scraping past the high-rise
windows.
Two weeks.
Fourteen days of zero contact, fourteen days of looking at a dark phone screen and reminding myself that dark territory means radio silence.
The sharp, sudden chime of the private elevator breaks the quiet, echoing off the high ceilings.
I set my mug on the island and glance over at the wall panel.
The camera feed flickers to life, showing the interior of the private garage downstairs. Parked right in front of the lift is Mayhem’s blacked-out Harley, exhaust still faintly piping heat into the cold air.
Standing right in front of the brass doors, wearing his cut, heavy work boots, and a dark hoodie pulled up over his head, is my big brother.
I press the release button, buzzing him up, and lean back against the counter to take another sip of coffee. A few seconds later, the lift doors glide open with a smooth mechanical hum. Mayhem steps out, filling the space instantly.
He looks massive – broad-shouldered, rough-edged, and carrying that restless, violent kinetic energy that always hovers around him like a storm system. His leather cut is scuffed, the VP patch sitting heavy on his chest.
The second those dark eyes lock onto me, the hard, lethal set of his jaw softens completely.
‘Look at you,” he says, his deep voice carrying through the open apartment. “Actually awake before noon.”
“Some of us don’t spend half the night drinking whiskey in the clubhouse back office,” I say teasingly, as I step out of the kitchen to meet him.
“Hey, that’s VP business,” Mayhem says. He shoves his dark hood back, revealing his messy hair, sharp jawline. He closes the distance in two long strides, reaching out and pulling me into a massive, rib-crushing hug.
He doesn’t do gentle hugs. He never has. He wraps his heavy arms around my shoulders, lifting my feet entirely off the hardwood floor for a second before setting me back down.
I bury my face in the thick leather of his vest, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of my brother. It’s a rough, protective kind of love, the kind that feels like a shield made of solid steel.
“You’re squeezing my ribs, Mayhem,” I mumble against his chest, though I wrap my arms tight around his waist anyway. “Killing me, here.”

Gotta make sure you’re still in one piece,” he says, finally letting go but keeping a heavy hand clamped on The back of my neck. He looks down at my face, his eyes scanning my features with intense, silent scrutiny. “You look decent, Zarabug. A little pale, but decent.”
“I’m fine,” I roll my eyes, pulling away from his grip. “Come on in. You want coffee?”
“Does a bear shit in the woods? Of course I want coffee. Black. Don’t put any of that sweet oat-milk vegan garbage in it.”
“I have real cream, you barbarian,” I call over my shoulder, walking back into the kitchen. “Not that you can appreciate it.”
He follows me, his heavy engineer boots thudding against the polished wood floor. Instead of taking a barstool at the island, he walks straight past the kitchen and heads right for the massive wall of glass overlooking the water.
He shoves his hands into his front jeans pockets, staring out at the violent, grey crashing waves and the cloud-draped peaks across the ocean.
“Damn fine view,” he says, his voice carrying back to me over the hiss of the machine. “Locke spent a fucking fortune on this place, but I gotta give it to him. Feels like sitting on top of the world.”
