Chapter 154-2
“I don’t give a damn if we sit there for twenty hours,” he says, pacing a tight circle before turning back to face me, his hands on his hips. “I am not sitting up here watching my sister pass out on the floor.”
“If you take me to the ER, I’ll be exhausted, exposed to every germ in the city, and miserable,” I say calmly. “I have my final oncology panels scheduled in six days, but I can call my doctor right now and get a slot for tomorrow morning. If I do that, I won’t have to sit in a public waiting room.”
He stands glaring down at me, his jaw clenching so hard I can hear his teeth grinding. He hates hospitals, he hates waiting, but most of all, he hates feeling helpless.
“Tomorrow morning,” he grunts, his voice tight. “Not two days from now. Tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow.”
“Call them,” he demands, crossing his massive arms over his chest and standing over the sofa like an iron guard rail. “Right now. On speaker. I want to hear the receptionist confirm the time.”
“You are so bossy, Mayhem,” I mutter.
I reach over to the marble coffee table, picking up my phone with slightly shaky fingers. I dial the direct line for Doctor Mercer. I put it on speaker, setting the phone on my chest as it rings.
He doesn’t move an inch. He stands there, broad, dangerous, and brooding, listening intently as the receptionist picks up. I explain that I fainted, and after a short pause, she confirms an emergency appointment for noon tomorrow with my doctor.
I tap the screen to end the call and look up at my brother. “See? Noon tomorrow. Proper clinic, proper doctor, zero waiting room disease.”
He lets out a long, heavy grunt, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Fine,” he growls. “And you’re staying on that couch for the rest of the day. You’re not going to the garage, you’re not cooking, you’re not doing a damn thing.”
“I have things to do at the garage, Mayhem -”
“You think so, huh?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, how about this?” I’ll call Jade right now and tell her you fainted.” He pulls his phone out of his pocket with a smirk. “You know what she’ll do? She’ll come over here with an army of blankets, lock you in your bedroom, and force-feed you chicken soup until you pass out.”
I gasp, horrified. “You wouldn’t dare. She’ll panic!”
“Try me,” he says, hovering his thumb over Jade’s contact. “Test my resolve, Zarabug. See what happens.”
“Okay, fine. I’m staying on the couch,” I say, throwing my hands up in the air and sinking back down into the cushions. “You’re an absolute tyrant.”

Chapter 154T
“I’m a great big brother,” he says, slipping his phone back into his pocket.
Clam
He stands there for a moment, looking down at me. My breathing has evened out and I don’t feel shaky and cold, but I can tell he’s still deeply uneasy about leaving me alone in the massive, empty penthouse. He glances at the front door, then at his watch, his jaw working as he wrestles with his options.
He pulls his phone back out, taps the screen, and lifts it to his ear.
“Who are you calling now?” I ask. “Not Jade!”
“Dad,” he says simply. A second later, the call connects. “Dad. Yeah, it’s me. Listen, I’m gonna be stuck at Zara’s place for the next few hours… No, everything’s fine, just kicking it with her… Yeah, push the meeting with Rook to four o’clock. I’m not leaving yet… Right. Got it.”
He hangs up the phone and tosses it onto the end of the sofa.
“You don’t have to stay, Mayhem,” I say, though a warm, comforting wave of gratitude washes over me. “I know you have club stuff to do.”
“The club can survive without me for six hours,” he says, walking over to the media console below the massive television. He picks up the remote, flipping the TV on and navigating straight to Netflix. “Besides, you still look kinda like crap and somebody needs to make sure you don’t try to clean the goddamn kitchen.”
He scrolls through the streaming menu, his eyes flicking past the dramas and comedies, landing straight on the horror section. A gruesome, blood-splattered movie poster pops up on the screen.
“Oh, come on,” I groan, laughing. “I just fainted, and you want to watch a movie about a chainsaw killer?”
“It’s a classic,” he says, dropping his massive frame into the leather armchair right next to the sofa. He kicks his heavy boots up onto the edge of the coffee table, settling in with a satisfied grin. “Plus, if you pass out again, at least I know it’ll be from the jump scares.”
“You’re terrible,” I say, pulling the soft fleece throw blanket off the back of the couch and dragging it up to my chin. “Scaring your fragile little sister to death.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he chuckles. The dark, eerie opening music of the movie begins to swell through the high-end speakers, filling the quiet living room. “You’re fragile like a fucking grenade, girl.”
I roll my eyes at him, but I can’t stop the smile from spreading across my face. I pull the fleece blanket tighter around my shoulders, tucking my feet beneath my thighs as the movie’s dark title screen flickers. across the television.
“I’m going to hold you to that when I’m forty,” I say. “When I’m old and gray, I’m still going to remind you that you called me a grenade.”
Mayhem snorts, a quiet, deep chuckle rumbling in his chest. “Forty? Kid, you’re gonna be eighty-five, still bossing Locke and me around… and I’ll still be sitting right here.”
“I’m glad.”
“Hey, Zarabug?” Mayhem says, his eyes remaining glued to the screen as the opening scene gets underway.

Yeah?”
“You’re sure about this appointment tomorrow?” he asked, “Because if you feel even a little bit off, I’m carrying you down to the truck and taking you straight to the ER. I don’t care how much you fucking complain.”
“I’m sure,” I reassure him. “I’m fine. Really.”
Chem
He nods once, sharp and decisive, as if officially filing the information away. “Good. Because if that doctor tries to pawn you off tomorrow, I’m going down there myself to have a private word with her.”
“You wouldn’t dare,” I laugh, throwing my throw pillow at him.
He catches it easily without even looking away from the screen, tossing it right back at me. “Try me. Now shut up and watch the movie! That teenager in the bikini is about to make the worst decision of her life.”
I settle deeper into the cushions, letting the low hum of his presence wash over me.
And I don’t feel fragile at all.
